Ok friend is having a problem determining between a fully loaded GXE and a GLE, the car has leather and all the options, sunroof, etc. But there is no badging on the car the deciphering the vin doesn't tell what it is and the owner does not have the invoice for the car. The car was totalled for an insurance claim and my friend works for the insurance company and theyre having a hell of a time figuring out what it is. Are the alloy wheels different between the models, same suspension bushings? fog lights?

Raise the hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the
passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification
Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first
five characters are BLHUL. The sixth character is the trim level
designator:
E = GXE
G = GLE
V = SE

OK, according to the official options list in 1995 (when I bought mine), the GLE has electronic controlled liquid filled front engine mount and liquid filled compression bushings. If you can't get that technical, look on the dash and see if it's got automatic temp control. It looks like GXE's couldn't get that option with any package. Course, it also says you can't get leather on a GXE (remember this is from 1995 Nissan brochure which I still have). If someone else says you CAN get leather in a GXE, maybe it was model-year specific.
Nutshell (1995): leather, auto climate control, liquid filled umpty-umps I mentioned above, push-open storage drawer in center console, simulated wood trim.
Daniel may have the scoop on the coding, so if all else fails, go with what Nissan says it was in the factory.
