is it a 30mm nut? i tired a 28 and it was to small seems like it would be a 30mm. thanks

 

the one that holds the axle on the wheel hub? It's a 36mm. It's the one that you have to take out the cotter pin to get to...

 

whoa 36mm damn... i just tried a 29mm and it seemed like it was almost a fit. that is one big **** socket.. thanks man.

 

No problem. I'm almost positive they didn't change from 96-99 and mine is 36mm. Just get one from NAPA and if it isn't right, take it back. They let you with receipt

 

Yea, the axle nut is a 36mm. You can get axle nut sockets at most if not all auto parts stores, but you have to ask specifically for that because most places don't have regular 1/2" sockets that large.

That nut requires a good ~250 ft/lbs, so it's going to be a ***** breaking it loose. An impact works pretty well (even an electric impact, it's what I used during my trans swap). If you don't have a torque wrench just get a long *** ratchet and a pipe or just use a breaker bar and pretty much stand on it, you can't really shear off that large of a thread without some pretty tremendous pressure. I would recommend a cheap Craftsman torque wrench though, in 1/2" drive, it comes in handy and it's good to keep things torqued down to specs.

 

i have a 50 gallon compressor it will be no problem and if all fails i have a 6ft breaker bar

 

Yeah, chances are one side or the other will be a total SOB to get off. Mine was the drivers side! I had to use an 18" breaker bar with a 3' pipe on it to lift it off. me bouncing on it wasn't doing it. Make sure your car is well supported. Also, it would probably be easier to loosen it up while the car is still on the ground.(if your socket you get will fit in the hole in your rim...)

 

autozone (if you have them) rents the sockets. they're special and extra deep. i secured a crowbar between the lug studs to keep the hub from rotating. it will take alot of force...

 

ugh mine isnt 36mm it was way to big? 29 almost fit so i guess its 30mm? thats wierd that its not 36mm like you guys said..

 

if you're planning to change the axle, might wanna look at raxles if you haven't already. I just went through 2 differen axles today from napa. Winded up giving that crap back to them and ordered from raxles...wasting my time

 

im doing my rear hubs not front fyi i should have said that in the begging. are the front and rear bolts differnt sizes?

Yeah, 36 is the fronts. Thats what we thought you meant...
