95-96 All clear tail project
95-96 All clear tail project
I need closure on how to work with the all clears for 95-96. I really don't want to do anything wrong, so I'm looking for advice on the best way to open them, paint them and close them up. Tips and pics would really be appreciated.
I believe there's a writeup for the 97-99 red/clear tails either in the 4G stickies, or vqpower.com, or both. Using that writeup, you can see how to "cook" them, and open them up. From there, it's literally just masking off the bottom portion of the tail light to paint red (or masking everything else all is what I mean.). I painted mine on the outside, I didn't want to cook them, and they look ok. For what it's worth, I'll probably go back this summer and redo the tails the right way.
That's really all there is, just make sure your masking job is perfect, spray 6-12 inches away in light coats, and they'll turn out fine. As far as cooking the tails, it shouldn't be that hard, although I don't have personal experience with it. If you really want to, try on a stock tail first to get the hang of it. Just one more thing to remember - pry very gently. Oh, and pm chillin, he was describing how he heated them if I remember it correctly.

start on 200 degrees for about 4-5 minutes in the center of the oven.
carefully take em out, use a flat head to pull (not pry) the lens off, don't use so much force that you break the lens.
the glue should get sticky enough to pull the lens off with low-medium effort.
I don't remember exactly, but I remember mine taking 250 degrees for only 5-6 minutes and they pulled off fine.
again, check the stickies I remember seeing a link to candy red paint that matches stock as well.

I thought so, but thanks for the confirmation. Picking that up today.
Walmart normally has it. If for some reason you cannot find it, I have a couple of new cans of it I could sell you. I had planned on reding out my 95-96 stockers but have no intention on doing that now.
If you want them that bad I'm sure you could probably make them yourself using the lights from the 97-99 GenII and the housings off the 95-96 Altezza's. Surprised noone's done this.
Wait...no I'm not.

I used pre-heated 240deg for 6 mins. Take your time around the lens, do alittle bit and move on untill you have the whole thing a little bit out. From there you should be able to seperate them. Do this slowly as you do NOT want the glue on the inside of the damn lense. Not that i would know....

Yea, I will definitely take my time. Not gonna force it at all. If it doesn't go, I'll just put it back in the oven for a minute. But I'm still having a hard time figuring out exactly what part gets seperated. Is the lens just one skinny flat piece all the way across or are there any clips or anything? I'm guessing that the clips are from the inner housing...? I'll probably have to take a pic and put it up here to show what I'm talking about.
