Ball Joints

I have a 1998 GLE. Are the ball joints replacable or do I have to replace the whole arm.

Thanks,
neil

They told me that my 95 ball joints weren't replaceable but I bought one and did it. Not easy because you need a special tool to remove and install because they are pressed in but it is possible. I assume the 98 will be the same. I got the tool at the local parts store that will let you use the tool for free with a deposit. The price of the tool was $250 if you had to buy it.

I just replaced the whole arm. The bushing were going so I said what the heck and replaced them. If you want a brand new arm from the dealer it is about $244+tax each. I got mine for 149 each or so. Your choice, replace the ball joint now and later on have to replace the arm, or do it all together. it also depends on how many miles are on your arm too. Good luck with your replacement.

I pulled my control arm and brought it to a machine shop. I had them pull the old one, press the new one for around $15. All in all it was under $40.

If you do not have damage to your control arm I would do the above, if it is not in the best shape then just swap the arm. Either way it will not be much.

I got both side Lower Control Arms (LCA) from eBay foir $120. The look like good parts, ball joint is new, and they come with a new cotter pin and bushings. You check the eBay listings yourself.
