97 max vs. 02 1.8t
I drive a 1997 maxima se 5 spd. The only mods i have done are cone filter, and obx racing down pipe and headers, and a stage 1 clutch. My neighbor drives an 02' jetta 1.8t, with a cold air intake. He doesn't know of any other mods because he bought the car used. Any way, we raced, i had him off the line, his 2nd gear killed mine, my third gear pulled on him but his 4th gear just pulled on me. then we raced on the highway from a 3rd gear and i tooled on him, but i swear that he should not have beat me at all right? I'm confused pissed and am wondering if something is wrong with my car why it cant beat a girls car.

1.8T running half an atmosphere boost pressure (8 lb) = +50% power, equal to a (1.8 + 0.9)L normally aspirated motor (= 2.7L)
Which is 10% less than your 3L motor. However - I suggest it must be the weight difference - because a 6 cyl motor has LOTS more power under the curve than any 4 cyl. (My Sentra doesn't even get moving until it's passing 3,500 RPM)

If your ECU threw a KS code and O2 sensor then replace both. People often say the KS code is a "ghost" code but that's not the case - it doesn't light up the engine light and can go bad without notice. A bad KS can cause the ECU to retard the timing and cost you engine performance. As for the O2 sensor, if it's an upstream one, it is directly used in controlling the air/fuel mixture and has a direct impact on engine performance. If it's an upstream O2, I'd replace both banks. If it's the downstream O2 there's only one to replace.

I dont remember if the thing said oat sensor or iat senser but i do know it said front 02 sensor and ks, so is that the front exhaust manifold o2 sensor or rear or both?.....and when installing the rear exausht manifold i had to seal shut the o2 bung on one side because the axel was in the way (F**K obx) and weld another bung on to the other side... 20hp huh?/ that will do it...

It's probably not a stock 1.8t jetta. Stock 1.8t's shouldn't be able to keep up with you like that. Unless you're a horrible driver, no offense.
Run with a stock 1.8t, he was back 6 car lengths from 2nd to 4th.
I had a run with one who had rechipped ecu, a little more boost and the bolt ons. I pulled first and second. 1.8t was pulling at the top of third and 4th just kept pulling. I lost by one car length.

either the jetta has more stuff done to it or your in desperate need of a tune up. do you also have those boat anchor 20" rims? you have a giant bangin system in your trunk? you have to take a lot of things into consideration. also, how good of a shape are your tires in?
those little bastard cars pull i raced a 2002 when i graduated high school and those cars have a good pull but nowhere near our maxima's man. once he gets to a high speed and the turbo cant spool up anymore cause of the stock set up (again if it is STOCK like he says) you should be able to take him with no governor
PS: you know what shift points are? maybe your shifting too early or too late

I have a GTI, and coming from a VW community, I'm not surprised a 1.8T kept up with you. Those engines have a lot of potential. All it takes is a reflashed ECU and they're a whole different car. I've seen a 1.8T with bolt-ons take on a 350Z with similar mods. The 1.8T didn't win, but it definitely gave the 350Z a run (I think the 350Z won by a fender length). However, the 1.8T is only strong in GTIs or Jettas. Put a 1.8T in an Audi with Quattro and that thing is slow as a pig.
Eitherway, I still like my Maxima more than my GTI

there not bad, i drove an 02-03 1.8t and they move pretty good for what they are, my maxima is faster but its still pretty impressive for a 1.8. the a4 quattro's i can imagine are slower seeing as it now has to move a lot more drivetrain the fwd jettas/gti's do.

ok, cool. That turbo certainly adds some serious torque to that car, I was very impressed. I would never buy one though, he had it for about half a year and it was almost stolen 3 times already.
