throw out bearing chatter

this can not be happening. less then a year ago i replaced my tranny with a 5th gen and also put in a new clutch. it all began with the throw out bearing starting to rattle and chatter and get progressively louder until i had my mechanic check it out and give me the bad news. so now everytime i pull my foot off the clutch in neutral im starting to hear a faint chatter that sounds exactly like the throw out bearing did before. its most noticable in my garage, and although i realize that the garage amplifys the sound the fact that i'm hearing it really concerns me.

i dont ride the clutch and am actually pretty easy on it. but even if i was a drag racer i wouldnt expect problems this early.

so what should i do?

If your foot is off the clutch when you hear the noise it is NOT the throwout bearing, it is the input shaft bearing.

if its the input shaft bearings yes. a new Throw out bearing would be much cheaper to fix

yes you should. if you can't do the work yourself you're looking at a $600-$1000 fix. if you can do it yourself it's a few hours of your time and like $35 for the bearing.

I have the same problem too and the mech said it was the TOB and I should change the clips as well. Since I only hear the sound when im not on the clutch should i just rebuild the tranny or just change both bearings and the clips? when i drive it sounds like a grinding skateboard sound and other than that there is no acclerating prob except the knock sens needs to be changed. Where is the input bearing located. Now im so confused I dont know what the problem is anymore

your mechanic doesn't know what he's talking about. The throw out bearing DOESNT EVEN TURN when your foot is not on the clutch, the only time it turns and could POSSIBLY make ANY noise is when you have your foot on the clutch. It just sits there doing nothing if your foot is not on the clutch. I wonder how these mechanics became certified because they obviously don't have a clue what's going on.

the input shaft bearing is inside the transmission, you have to take the transmission apart to replace it.

Its because of mechanics like that one, and the fact I dont like to give my money away to someone to do something I could do myself, that I go by the Golden rule of workin on cars- If you want it done right, do it YOUR D@MN SELF!

I have a similar problem with the clutch when I first got the car the clutch went out I paid $600 to have it replaced and since the day I picked it up
it has had clutch chatter. I took it back and they told me it was a bad motor mount so I was going to replace them but they were all new. Anyway after a few months my clutch pedal starting feeling different. I have to hold the pedal all the way to the floor or let it all the way out at the very top of the pedal. I took it to 3 different shops and they all told me nothing was wrong with it one guy adjusted the pedal for me and it felt real good for about a week or two and slowly but surely it got bad again now when it neutral I hear this noise soon as I push in the clutch it stops I have the pedal adjusted again and the noise has stopped for the the time being. I personally think it hydraulic and I need to replace the clutch slave cylinder and maybe the clutch master cylinder. I believe in order to get rid of the the clutch chatter I will have to have the flywheel machined but I don't know about that noise when I let the clutch out. Please if anybody can help me out I would be very greatful

i just changed mine cause i was getting some clatter while letting out on the clutch when engaging in first from a stop. it wasn't bad at first but last friday it got scary so my girl and i dropped the trans and found the retaining clips on the t/o bearing broken (one was crack and the other was gone). i replaced the bearing, threw the trans back in with a little help from my lady and now everything is beautiful. save the money and do it yourself! if you've never done it before give yourself two days and make sure autozone is open as you most likely don't have all the tool you'll need.
