HORRIBLE SCREECHING noise at startup

I have this horrible screeching noise at startup..mostly on colder weather. when i press on the accelerator,it makes the noise louder and screechier but after it 'warms up' the sound dissapears. when i go somewhere and come back after a while the noise comes back on start up. what is it?

Same thing happened to me after my car went in for something to get fixed. Just take it to the mechanic and let them hear the noise or describe it. This is so commonplace, I've heard many a car in my lifetime with that exact same noise. BTW, when I took it in all the guy did was pop the hood and adjust something with a wrench. It took about 20 seconds. As long as the belt doesn't need to be actually replaced this should not be expensive nor time consuming. I'd be suspicious of anyone who said it was.

I had the same problem a while ago.

1. If you have the stock alternator, the bearing is known to make madd noise and only in startup, check it.

2. Your belts, the ac and accs belts.

3.HOpe is not ur case, the timming chain.

Good luck.

Your starter might need to be re-greased!

Why would it be the timing chain?
Timing chains dont make a "screeching" sound then go away when it warms up.

Chains rattle - not screech

All that will do is slosh around brown gunk that will forever be sprayed all around the pulley/axle/oilpan/timing chain area. It won't tighten the belt.

AND tightening the belt is free as well as having none of those negatives.

They still could be loose or your tensioner could be broken.

He says the noise continues with revving and fades as it warms up. Not starter.

if you run a bad tensioner for a while oil will cease to get to the timing chain, causing it to run without lubrication which in turn causes it to screech, at this point is when your VERY CLOSE to F*CKING UP your engine

ok, i thought the tensioner only put tension on the chain
i didn't know it was the sole provider of oil to the chain

One start with the hood up and someone, better yet you standing there. They are on opposite sides of the engine bay so it will be obvious.

If turning the steering wheel just after startup makes it worse it is your PS belt, otherwise it is the accessory belt slipping while cold.

The AC belt IS the accesory belt. AC/ALT/idler pulley

The other belt is the power steering pump.

Try turning on your car with the AC on i.e. turn your car off without turning the ac off prior. Come back in the morning, start the car and the AC will come on immediately and the sound will be even worse. Then thats the AC belt.

If you have auto climate control, turn the car on and put the defrost ON, and that should make a louder noise than normal if it is the AC.

The starter makes a different kind of sound. It sounds like a motor spinning out of control and then stopping a few seconds after the car starts.

If its not, then its got to be those pulleys/tensioners or alternator

I have had that screeching noise for some time I replaced the belt and it was fine for months then it started again so I replaced the tenisoner pulley but that wasn't the problem either I thought I needed to replace the other belt when I got under there to do it the whole entire belt is covered in grease it looks like wheel bearing grease but I have no idea where it came from nothing appears to be leaking. Anybody have any suggestions?

maybe your inner cv boot is cracked and it is flinging grease up there on the belts?
