PLEASE HELP!! (Stillen Intake)
#1
Guys...
I bought a used intake from my neighbor. He had it on his '99 Max SE. I just put it on my '97 Max SE. Everything sounded and looked great except after I installed it, I realized that there was a hole drilled in the end under the word "STILLEN". There is an unusual sucking noise coming from this hole (which is obviously the air going in), but is the hole supposed to be there? I haven't paid him for it yet, and if it's not supposed to be there, I'll give it back and say I don't want it. I've attached a picture of the intake. Please tell me if the hole is supposed to be there. I don't think it is because it's unfiltered air going in...and I need to know because I have to take my car somewhere...and I'll put the stock airbox back in if I need to! Thanks!!

Heh,
I don't have a stillen intake, but my cone is designed in a M shape, (ie, /\/\).. It sucks air through the sides, and through the top. I'd venture to say the stillen one is the same. If someone with one doesn't verify this, just make sure there's part of a filter in the hole..
Sucking noises are normal with an intake, you'll get used to it.

Intake
That hole is for the air tempature sensor.Chances are you took out your old factory box. On the botttom half of the box will have the A.T.S.. you have to pull this out and put
it in the stillen hole. If you don't you may get a check engine code. Also you may get dirt suck into your engine so cover up the hole until you put the sensor in.

yeah, the 99s dont have a sensor to plug up the hole, but the previous models did (dont know which years). if you dont have a sensor to fit into this hole, you should just plug it up with something. maybe a piece of plastic, and magic duct tape...

Stillen Intake
That intake will work for the 99, I have it. The Ambient Temperature Control is under the stock intake. You have to play w/ the wiring to get it to reach the hole in the Stillen intake, but it will. If you run the car w/o that hole being covered, your check engine light will come on and you will have to take it to the shop. When you take off the stock box, there are two holes - one for the MAS intake to the engine and the other for air coming in from outside through the intake duct. Reach into the bottom hole of the intake duct and feel on the right side. You can feel the ATC. You will need to take the rubber seal out as well. Plug them both into the hole on the Stillen intake and you are ready to go.

Well, after I put the intake in...I made a BIG mistake and ran it. This was before I realized the hole was there. Well, I always knew it was there...this was before I realized it shouldn't be there!! Anyways, I ran the car for a minute or two to listen to it. Now my check engine light is on!! I took out the STILLEN Intake and put the stock airbox back in for now. I also just took the car to a few errands (with the stock airbox) and the check engine light remained on the whole time.
SC99MaxSELmtd: I have a '97. Does my car have this ATC? If it does, I'll go out and hook it up the right way.
What I really want to know is...what am I supposed to do about my check engine light now?
Thanks for everyones help,
-Nick

I put the Stillen intake on my 97 SE.
The sensor should be pretty obvious when you take off the stock box.
The Stillen instructions were a bit limited. [as in, they suck]
They said to loosen the wiring "loom" or whatever it is
to get the length in the wire.
I couldn't do that, so I just spliced in about 6 extra inches
of wire.
However, when I went to the LSP meet
I saw lots of hiflow filters [non-stillen]
with a solid piece of metal and no place for the sensor.
I was wondering about that.
Wasn't thinking about model year though.

Well, I bought the intake used and didn't get any instructions with it. I e-mailed STILLEN asking if they could send me some...but they didn't. So I just installed it not even knowing about the sensor.
I also didn't get the cleaning kit for it, which I'm trying to find one.

I can bring in the instructions tomorrow and send em to you.
If not, I can scan them and attach a jpeg
but faxing is easier...
Also, where are you?
If you live in Cali, you need to have a sticker [comes w/ the Stillen filter]
that certifies the filter for emissions or something like that.
If you do live in Cali, I could send you the one that came with mine.

Also, I think I have a fax machine built into my computer. I'd have to ask my dad to be sure about that though. I'd really appreciate it if you could fax them to me. This forum has some really good members!

I think under the hood or right on the filter
but it doesn't matter in NJ, just Cali I think.
And it isn't a "nice" sticker anyway, just informational.
So, check w/ your computer tech guy and lemme know...

I figured out the problem with my check engine light. I turned the car off and back on and did the procedure again and got error 0505, which means "All Clear" according to bill99gxe's post.
I reset the ECU and started the car and the light was off. I'm happy now. All I want to do now is install my intake the right way!!

Just a note, yahoo i guess doesn't allow links to anything on their server, so if u click on the hyperlink, it will not work, however, if you are using IE, you can right click the link and go to copy shortcut, then paste it into a new window, it will work fine.
