New Horn - No Alarm Siren!

Ever since I replaced the stock horns in my Max to a pair of Hella Trumpet Horns, the factory security system stopped sounding the horns. Each stock horns has one terminal. The Hella horns have two, positive and ground. The stock horns worked w/o having a separate ground for each one. For the Hella, I had to use ground wires to get them to work. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem. I do hear the relay working when I make the alarm go off. The headlights do flash but the horns won't sound. One interesting thing I have noticed now is that when I honk the horns, the headlight flashes as well. Although this is a cool feature that I seemed to have stumpled upon by accident, I'm baffled as to why the horns won't sound when the alarm is going off.

For those who have a factory security system in their Maximas who have changed the factory horns, did anyone experience this issue? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Your new horns are not wired correctly. I have Hella's in my car, everything works fine. Simply put the stock horn plug onto the pos. terminal and run a wire from the ground terminal to the bolt on back of the horn. That will give the horns a chassis ground, same as the stock horns use.

I had a chance to mess with this a little bit more, I noticed that on each horn is a marking for each terminal. It's not + or - unfortunately, otherwise it would have been a no brainer. Instead it has a 45 (marked with a copper dot) and 04 (marked with a silver dot). I assumed that 45 is the positive terminal which is how it was wired as to begin with. I went ahead and swapped wires and made terminal 45 ground and terminal 04 positive, still didn't work. I don't know what else to do, alarm system wiring isn't one of my strong abilities.

Wow, that is strange. It actually sounds like there's some wiring mixed up in your car. Does your horn honk when you turn on your lights?

Well I've gone over it a few times and can't really come up with anything useful, I'll follow the thread though... I'm sure that's a consolation.

Don't use the relays. I have mine just connected directly to one terminal side and the other terminal side is grounded. When I push the alarm everything comes on including the horns. Also, I connected both horns behind the grill and got rid of the horn on the side.

What do you mean by not using the relay? You still need to have a relay for the horn. There is a factory horn relay that is inside the fusebox located on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Did you mean not to replace that with the relay that came with the horns?

Also, it is a good idea to leave the horn on the side since that horn is out of reach. Someone could easily cut the wires to the horns behind the grill if someone is to attempt to defeat your car's security system.

So basically, you are using the stock relay in the fuse box. I took out the stock relay and plugged the hella one in place. Maybe that's the problem. I don't even know where I've put the old relay.

Yep, use the stock relays. That's how i have mine wired and the alarm/panic works when activated.

I found the stock relay! I pulled the Hella relay out and plugged the stock ones back in. Now the horn sounds when the alarm goes off or on panic mode!

It seems like the stock relay is a bit different from the Hella one.

Great to hear you got it to work. Now install that shatter alert relay so that your car will alarm if someone breaks the windows.

Hella horns are good ones, louder than stock horns. Go to this website:
http://www.hella.com/produktion/Hell...orns/Horns.jsp .

You have a choice between the Supertone or the Trumpet horns. I have the Trumpet horns and my car sounds like a domestic when it honks. Loud and obnoxious.

I don't want to just buy, I want to know how it sounds first, is there any website with audio?

Try looking around that website. Most sites basically indicate the frequency of the sound and the decibels. By those numbers, we should be able to tell how the horn sounds but not everyone has the ability to translate those numbers to audible tones. Basically, 300 to 500 hz tones mimics the sound of domestic horns, 110 db is pretty loud. 118db is a bit louder. If I get some time, I'll record my horn sound so you'll get an idea.
