Quote: I have a 97 and had a 92, I heard the earlier ones (95-97)are better because they were made in Japan. Don't if that is true or not. I have never had a problem with either of them.
ALL Maximas made up to '03 were made in Japan

As long as your VIN falls within the production dates and it hasn't been done. Any Nissan dealer can run it and find out. Mine was happy to do it.

Paired with my UDP and new belts (and tensioner), the pulleys always put a smile on my face.

I really like the heavier steering of the 99s. I didnt look at 95-96s because of safety issues. 98+ have the option of side airbags which is good. I also like the front fascia's for the 97-99s.

99SE. Coil packs are known to be bad but I replaced the only one that failed.
The next big project - antenna mast.

'98 and '99 since they have outside temp. display ('98 needs to be modded though) but '98 since it is carb approved with Stillen's supercharger kit. I'm bummed my '99 isn't legal.

'92????

i have a 97 and the only issue i have is the ECU... apparantly there is no direct fit aftermarket ECU - if i want to add one - most likly the engine codes would signal. so i hear from reading alot of threads. they say there is some jumping you can do to the wires but may or may not work.

but i still would go with 97 because i heard ecu issues with 98 too. :P this is all just stuff i have been reading on the forums, a gerneral info - mabe i dont read good.

97 and 99 FTW, better looks, only reason id go with the 98 is for the digital odometer, other than that, i love my 97, and its climate control better than the others...

no 99 for the ecu/emission crap, and 95-96 cuz they don't look as good.

The 1997 Nissan Maxima has been proven to be the overall best Maxima ever made. The latest study done by "Nissan Motorsports International" gathered several years of data (year models 95-06) in several key areas (performance/mechanical/luxury/cosmetic design), in which the 97 came out on top by a large margin.

Jeremy Clarkson's Supertest back in 2004 also resulted in the same findings in a generational Maxima test (1997 Model representing the 4th gens). The 1997 was his favorite in comfort and performance.

(performance/mechanical/luxury/cosmetic design) - for the 97? No offense to Nismo or owners but how.. performance is the same, mech. more of the same give or take, luxury same, but cosmetic wize IMO the '98 and '99 had better looking steering wheels and the digital odometer FTW as previously stated. Lastly, I don't know what category SRS would be under other than "safety" and thats another '98 or '99 Max.

With all that said maybe theres something I'm not seeing, but to me the '98 should take the prize. The '99 had its share of problems so we can X that one out as well. Unfortunately I own a '98 so I wouldn't count my opinion.

Quote: I have a 97 and haven't hade a problem with it yet so It is the best year of the 4th gen to me... I don't like the 95-96, because the front grill looks strange , and the back taillight is to big.
teh 95 taillights are the coolest by far. the ruined it after 95-6, and the grill is DEFENITLY the nicest cause i said so, ha ha!!!!!!

I'm going to say 98 because

a) has the lcd odo which removes tampering when looking for a used model

b) the 99 had the coil pack issue--it seems to be common knowledge on this forum and my friend's wife had to have 6 replaced twice which really annoyed them $$$-wise as they went to Nissan twice

c) 95-96 has a g** steering wheel and also even looser steering than the 97-99, even though one would think that's impossible

my .02
