screws stuck in stereo

i have a 98 max with bose, and i'm trying to replace the stereo. i've taken apart the dash to install a cd changer and aux input at two different points. i know what's going on in there, but the problem i'm having today is that the eight screws (four on each side) that hold the head unit into the dash will not budge. the won't even move a bit, and i'm about ready to strip the head off one. has anyone else experienced this or have any advice? they're flathead screws, so a socket wrench won't work. i'm so close to installing the new stereo; i'd really like to finish this up. thanks.

Try using a flat head screw driver in those. I had the same problem when removing mine. I tried the phillips head and it just seemed to be stripping the head.

TRUST ME! Get the proper size screwdriver, if its a bit too big or small you are just going to strip the screw. Get a quality screwdriver and make sure when its on the screw that it is fully mated.. otherwise strip city. Apply quite firm pressure on the screwdriver as you turn to prevent slip.

If all else fails you might have to do what I did to the one screw that wouldn't come out .. and thats to drill it out, if you are going to resell the factory stereo make sure you don't let shavings from the drilled screw fall into the stereo

for those that changed their stereo, i think we all had this problem.. i stripped two of mine. make sure u get a lot of wd40 in there. i couldnt agree more, that the right size screwdriver will get it out. it'll fit quite snug too.

And then you'll find that with a 4th gen that you can't fit the thin plastic surround that comes with the stereo on because it will hit the plastic of dash stereo surround.. I had to leave it off but at some stage will drill new holes in the stereo brackets so the stereo sits deeper into the dash and allows the surround to fit.

I'm willing to bet all you guys are under the age of 30, because none of you suggested the "trick". I learned this in woodshop a while ago, instead of trying to loosen the screw try tightening it first (to "break" the seal) then loosen it. I guarantee it will work.

thats the same thing for me. i had a 92 camry w/ the same problem also. its the double din design that prevents u from having being able to install the plastic surround.

Well i'm 29 and i did try that 'trick' and infact it did go tighter.. but then started stripping as I tried to unscrew it... a decent solid tip screwdriver will get it.. a $2 will just round off the head
