Help! Someone tell me what just happened

I was going about 40 and i went to step on the brakes...all of a sudden it sounded like air was being let out of my tires on the right side (a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissh sound) for about 3 seconds. I turned into a gas station immediately and heard the sound two more times for less than a second each time. The tires are fine...and the brakes worked fine. Could it be my suspension? Any ideas? Somebody help me

You ran over a cat, and when you pushed on the brakes, the cat got smashed in between the rotor and caliper-pads.

If you hit the brakes decently hard, you hear that kinda sound.

check for vaccum leaks ? start the car and step on the brake a few times. try to replicate the sound to see where its comming from then you at least have a starting point and can give us some more info.

Nah...no cats under there

See its weird...I didnt slam on the brakes, I was rather light on them. Ive never heard a sound like that before. I tried checking it out when i stopped...but I couldnt see anything wrong. The car drives fine as if nothing happened. Im lost, I dont even know where to look. I mean I know they tend to make sounds when you slam on them...but this sounded like a blow off valve, maybe I have a hidden turbo?

All jokes aside though...any other ideas. I cant seem to find any vacuum leaks.

Could just be the tires making noise on the road?

Maybe you hit some water and didn't notice? Get somebody else to drive the car and look at it from the outside.

It is possible that the diaphragm in the power brake booster is starting to fail. With that you would here the sound of vacuum bypassing it when you apply the brakes. Usually in that instance however the pedal will become harder to push because you are losing your full assist.

I doubt anything happened. As long as the brakes worked fine when it made the noise I wouldnt worry too much. Try to replicate the noise.

Is the sound still happening? Is the car behaving differently, either when breaking or just handling? You can always have it checked out if you are worried....

A/C wasnt on...like i said..it definately sounded like it came from the tires...so i assumed a flat...and the only other thing that made sense to me would be my shock going out, but if no one has every heard one make that sound, then thats not it. It must have been the brakes....but they still work perfect. I dont know where else to look.

Since you haven't driven the car since then, don't know what else to say really.. drive it and see if anything is wrong.

I just took it out, and drove it exactly the way I did when it happened. No sounds at all. I didnt hear a vacuum leak and everything is still working good.

Hmm, Im wondering if this is happening with me on heavy braking cause I occasonaly hear that sound from the tires. But as long as I can stop it dosent bother me!

If it sounds like hissing when you're braking and the noise is coming from the engine compartment, I would inspect the brake power booster for a damaged booster vacuum line or damaged check valve.

It's this bell shaped thing that your master cyl is bolted to:

Inspect, then report back.
