Are these worth it?
Are these worth it?
I've been reading into picking up a new Y-pipe for my 97 Maxima GXE. Initially, I was planning on getting a Warpspeed one. However, I came across this on Ebay and was wondering if it would be a good deal or not. Does anybody have any ideas how well these would perform? Are they any good? Price wise, I'd love to kill two bird with one stone and get both a new Y-pipe and headers for my Maxima. However, I don't want to blindly buy something that will crap out on me after a few months. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
they say they're "SUPER SHINY" ... if thats not a selling point i dunno WHAT is.......NO.....
get warpspeed or cattman...dont ever buy no name parts on ebay for your maxima....the only headers made for our maximas (4th gens) that have the best fitment/gains/and durability would probably be cattman and they are something like 800 bucks plus ull be dishing out around 7-800 for installation...hope this helps, good luck

headers on the max give little gains for the price. just go with the y pipe and maybe a catback and b pipe later. thats what i am doing. Im also going with warpspeed b/c i read that they give discounts to .org members when you call them.
What kind of gains can you expect from a catback and b-pipe and about how much do they each cost? BTW, if you buy a "High Flow" catalytic convertor with your Y-Pipe from Warpspeed, what kind of benefits will the convertor provide? As far as I know, catalytic convertors are just for emissions purposes and not really for performance gains.
they are bigger tubes so more exhaust can get through. The entire system from y to muffler is supposed to gain 20 to 30 bhp total. not bad if you ask me for only like 450 bucks. thats like 22.50 to 15 dollars per BHP.

You get what you pay for..Just keep that in mind.

Dynos differ depending on ambient temps and density of air. Plus each cars are different, eventhough we're talking about the same type of vehicle, ie: engine mileage and condition. You can't use that as a solid basis for gains. You have to get your car dyno'd in order to get an accurate reading for gains. Needless to say, you will defnitely get some gains by going this route.

To add some comments about the cat question, from what I saw when I removed my cat while installing my cattman Y, the inlet and outlet of the stock Nissan cat is much wider than the outlet of the Y and the inlet of the B pipe. From a flow standpoint, I can't imagine the stock cat will cost you anything in flow unless the cat is very old and the element is clogged. From what I have read, the stock Nissan cat is very good, as far as OEM cats go. If it's not clogged or very old, I kee the stock one and invest the $100 in another mod.
Well to quote the modification FAQ:
The basics of performance are these, the first "power mod" you want to do is a Y pipe. It's cheap, its effective, and its easy to install. It is the best bang for your buck on a maxima. An aftermarket Ypipe replaces your stock Y pipe, which is the part of the exhaust system that sits between your engine, and your catalytic converter (it eliminates your PRECATS, which are 2 mini catalytic converters, not needed for emissions testing if your car is properly warmed up). You can expect about 15hp from one. Make no mistake, this is not going to turn your car from losing to Dodge Caravans to beating Ferraris, but it does give you a kick in the pants which you'll feel unless you are quadraplegic.
To answer your question blackmax1924, a 7% increase in hp on a Maxima is significant for a bolt-on mod, but if you're talking about butt dyno, adding a Y pipe is not going to make a "push you in the seat" kind of difference. Some of the butt dyno impression I'm sure is placebo affect.
