Tranny question

I have an autotragic and it seems whenever im parked on in incline for any given period of time, the next time i get in the car to take it out of park I have to use force. Sometimes it will just slide right out and other times it will go CLUNK and it sounds like springs are shaking under the car. I always use my parking brake (which is basically fried). Does this mean my tranny may be on the way out?

just to be sure i understand the whole problem...when you park on a hill/incline, do you set the park brake before putting the trans in park, while still holding the brake pedal? and do you take the car out of park with the park brake still set & holding the foot brake when starting out? if not try it this way & it may help alot with the effort to shift & the clunk. key here is to keep as much tension as possible off of the park pin in the trans.

When parking I put my foot on the brake put in in park, pull up parking brake, then release foot brake. When coming out of park...Foot brake, then parking brake down, shift to drive, and release foot brake. It always seems to do it. Even on the slighest incline.

ok, check your park brake ..pull up on an incline steep enough to let the car roll in neutral, put on the park brake, trans in neutral. does the car roll or stay? with the brake still on put the car in gear, does it still hold? still in gear give a liitle gas, does it move or just groan? if it moves in any case, the park brake isn't holding..could be adjustment, pads worn, not pulled up on handle enough, cable on one or both sides bad or frozen, or a caliper sticking. if the brake is holding the problem may actually be in the trans. oh yeah, put on the park brake then put it in park, just to see what happens when you park.

If you dont use the parking brake itll be a hard to get out of Park. Very annoying. When you use your parking brake make sure you pull it up high till you meat some real resitance, if not the car will be able to roll with the brake applied, making it hard to get into D.
