Starting Problem

ok this isnt my maxima its my stepmoms
(1995 Maxima SE Auto)
she puts the key in turns it to start the engine doesnt do anything except the radio and so on (nothing in the engine) she can jiggle it around and it will turn on

another weekend she tried to turn it on it didnt want to for a while

why would it have to be shaken to start it and it only does it when it wants to also starter maybe? ignition lock something... my dad is working on it he can fix it i just want to tell him whats wrong with it so he doesnt have to waste time and or money getting the wrong part

thanks Chris

The ignition switch is a known problem item on our cars. Have it replaced and she should start correctly.

it sould be one or the other. ignition switch problems are fixed by either jiggling your keys around and waiting for a while to start your car.

your starter issues can be fixed by hitting the housing of the starter with something strong like a hammer/ prybar to get it started.

when you turn the key on what happens?
