Need Help with a 1995 Max just purchased

Hi all, My bro recently purchased a 1995 Maxima GXE in California. He lives in Reno and drove it back. After a few days he was pulled over by a cop because a lot of smoke was coming out of the exhuast. The car passed smog in April and runs fine, no hessitations, weird noises, or knocks. A couple of people suggested it might be because of dirty piston rings so he ended up purchasing a bottle of Seafoam at a local Pepboys. He ran it for a while but the smoke has come back but not as noticiable as before. The car passed smog in California in June so what could be causing this problem? Suggestions? He recently changed to full synthetic oil because he noticed the oil in the engine was really dark. The color of the smoke is grayish and only puffs out when he's in high RPM's.

thanks in advance for any help...

The change to synthetic oil may have caused the problem. Dino oil may have been fine, but the switch to snythetic was enough to slip past the seals. It's not good news that the oil was dark. How long had it been since the last oil change?

he changed the oil before leaving California. He used synthetic blend. The last change was about 1 week ago. He used the Seafoam stuff yesterday and changed to full synthetic. Should he go back to regular oil?

I don't think it would hurt to try a dino oil, possible a heavier weight. What are you using now? If 5W30, try 10W30.

Yes dino = regular (non-synthetic).
