Gauges: Changing Faces
Gauges: Changing Faces
Question: Is there any simple way to take the black-faced gauge cluster from, say, a 96 GXE, and change the gauge faces over to the white ones that came on the SE without actually changing the instruments themselves? If so, is there something more than the faces that needs to also be changed to get the same illumination effect at night?
yes you can do this......either get indiglos or get a set of se faces.
there is a sticky in the how tos on how to remove the needles on the guages, replace the faces and put them back on and recalibrate

I've done it on my '92 Stanza with the SE faces from a '94 Maxima (same gauge cluster). It's not exactly difficult, but it is quite tedious and you have to be EXTREMELY careful not to break the needles or damage the faces when you are removing and replacing them. If you take your time and work very slowly and patiently you can do it. If you break the needles or damage the faces, you'll wish you had just swapped out the entire cluster. That's what I ended up doing on the Max. You can get the entire cluster at a reasonable price if you find one on ebay form time to tome. Good luck.
Also man look in the classified section on here. See if anyone has a used SE cluster for sale. I am looking at switching out the black faces to white ones with the blue needles from importcarpartsplus.com. They look REALLY
nice.
nice.
Let me word my question another way: I have a 96 SE white-faced gauge cluster that there seems to be a problem with the speedo. Although the speedo "seems" to work OK, I keep getting a CEL 500 code for the VSS, along with occassional failures of the cruise control to operate properly, and so far neither replacing the VSS and cleaning and tightening the electrical connections on the back of the speedo (as suggested solutions in quite a few threads on the subject of a VSS code) have cured the problem. I was able to find a used 96 SE replacement cluster that's now installed and seems to have cured the problem, but now I'm sitting here with a nice cluster that has what seems to be a faulty speedo. So if I were to try to sell it to someone who wants to retrofit over to white faced gauges, the buyer would have to either (1) swap out the gauge white faces onto his own speedo cluster, or (2) pull the speedo from his cluster and use it in this one that alrerady has the white faces.
So, in simple terms, my question is - are the speedos themselves compatable and easily interchangable?
