starter problem??

OK, i have already read and searched the stickies, but didnt find anything helpful for my situation...simply put, my car will not start. 95 GLE, 104k miles. i place the key in the ignition, turn it to ACC, and every piece of power and electricity comes on...however, when i turn it to start, it does absolutely nothing. no noises, no cranking, nothing. is this most likely my starter?? i will buy one off eBay, but i want to make dam* well sure this is it before i get one. i need this to happen quick because i have to have a mode of transportation, so ANYONE's help is greatly appreciated!!!! thanks in advance!...

it could be your ignition switch. It would produce the same results your getting now.

Also try tapping the starter pretty aggressively with a blunt metal object, then try starting and have someone keep tapping it. Just to eliminate the chances of it being a sticky starter.

You can check your ignition switch with a multi meter to make sure its bad before running out to the auto store to purchase. I cannot remember the specs it should read so look around or if you have a haynes handy it should have it in there.

I rebuilt one of those switches before, you just need to clean contacts inside the switch, or just get a new one from partsamerica.com for $30

Could it also be the SOLENOID on the starter? I have see them go bad also

wouldnt it atleast crank if it were the solenoid? or no? i am not sure. i think i am going to try tapping the starter and test the ignition switch and see what i get. hopefully it is just the ignition switch!!!!

it got stuck for a friend of mine once, after tapping it the car started and hadnt acted up since, but it was only in the car for a few more days till he got a new started and replaced it.

If you get it unstuck you should be fine for a little bit of time but who knows when it might get stuck again.

ignition switch is easy to change and less expensive than a starter to replace. But if your ignition swtich is going it wouldnt crank at all. You can try jiggling the key around while try to crank and see if that helps/starts the car.

bad crank sensor could do this also. but I'd try that if the starter and ignition switch didnt do anything.

1. Tap starter and crank
2. test ignition switch (try jiggling the key while trying to crank also)
3.Crank sensor

tell me if im wrong guys, but there should be a starter relay. turning the key should result in at least a click from the starter relay. if u dont hear a click at all. maybe its just your relay.

Absolutely not.

A bad crank sensor will allow the car to crank, but it will not start.
The crank sensors are not in the starter signal circuit and have nothing to do with the starters engaugement.

Crank sensors provide information to the ECU for ignition timing purposes once the engine is spinning.

I always get them missed up but its one of the crank or maybe cam sensor that also can prevent the car from starting. I believe the one that determins TDC.

in your case it would be the ignition switch.

first thing i would do is simple and obvious......check the conections on your battery.......if they are loose will do that as well.....

also try slapping thestarter solenoid
