Paint on Fiberglass (FRP lip owners help!)
Paint on Fiberglass (FRP lip owners help!)
I bought a fiberglass reinforced plastic lip which was painted with fiberglass paint. It needed a new paintjob so I cleaned it and prepped it for new paint. I only scuffed the old paint. The 3m wax and dirt remover I used acts like a solvent on the fiberglass paint. It starts to bubble up an disolves. I also tried shooting some automotive paint on it and it bubbles the paint especially at stone chips.
What can I do short of sanding down all the way to the plastic? Can I spray primer on the fiberglass paint, or will that also disolve the paint as well?
The guy I bought i from told me that even if I got the Duplicolor to stick it would flake off because it doesn't have flex agent in it. Is it true there is no flex agent in it? Am I screwed into getting a bodyshop to paint this. I thought that auto paint like duplicolor would have flex agent in it, or at least I could use a flexible primer right?
The reason that I am not spraying more Fiberglass paint on there is because i want the glossy clear coat finish. I'm not aware of any such thing with Fiber glass paint.
