Trans starting to go?

Ok so my 96 se has 127k miles on it and sometimes when i switch to reverse or switch to drive from reverse the car just turns off. I have to go into park and restart the car.. so is the trans starting to go? Its rare that this happens but it still does. Any help is appreciated!

Probably something other than your trans...

Any CEL codes, ghost codes? How does the intake plumbing look like, any leak in the intake system? Clean your throttle body lately? What does it idle at?

I dont know im getting it looked at by my mechanic on saturday when he puts in my new radiator. It idles at ~800 which seems normal and it drives fine. But either as soon as i switch to reverse or when i switch from reverse to drive it just shuts down. But then I restart the car fine and it drives perfect again...

I know, I havent checked the codes or anything yet and its 130 right now so all I could do was check how it idles.

Check your IACV - my G20 used to choke every time when switching between drive and reverse even after the tranny was rebuilt. Usually when you in reverse you also turn your wheels - PS pump puts additional load on engine while your foot is on brake, malfunctioning IACV is unable to compensate for this extra load and engine chokes - comparing to transmission it's a cheap repair. Good luck.

my tranny went at about 118000miles. had it rebuilt. same thing u desribed happened to me a couple times. reverse-stall-park-start. turns out it was a dust particle or something blocking a sensor. i just drove it regularly and the dust just washed away and hasnt bothered me since.

what i really noticed when my tranny was going was that it was slipping. and it had an erratic idle. meaning that sitting at a light i could feel it kind of like pulsing. then finally one day driving down the road i suddenly was like "hmm the car seems to be real slow....." so i floored it...couldnt get over 25MPH...yea all my gears were toasted except first.

so basically, if you think its going...take it to a shop. have them diagnos it(usually diagnosis is free), and have it fixed if theres something wrong. it will be MUCH cheaper to fix now, rather than waiting til it goes like i did. cost about $1900 for me to have it rebuilt. and they said i coulda saved money if i braught it in earlier.

It will cost more to get a replacement trans than to have yours rebuilt. However, it is not your tranny that needs work. If you try to shift and it won't go into gear or won't move the car once in gear, then you know it's time for a tranny shop. While on this subject, change your tranny fluid.

You could do it next time DIY for less than 1/2 that price if you're not afraid of turning your own wrenches.

I wouldnt know what to do to change my own breaks and stuff. Could prob figure it out but felt more comfortable having a mechanic do it for me. And 400 for everything seemed like a pretty good deal to me.

Make sure your mechanic didn't break anything in your brake system.

I'm having a similar problem w/ my car and I have just about 122k on it. Just a few minutes ago (car wasn't warmed up yet) I was pulling out of my driveway and as soon as I put it in reverse from park the car cut off. I start the car back in neutral, I rev it up and bit and the car shuts right off again....this happened about 7 times. Once the car warms up though, it's fine. Does anybody know what can be causing this? My mechanic checked the code and he said that it was the front O2 sensor...can this really be the cause of my problems? My main mechanic is moving down to FL today, so when the check engine light comes back on I'm gonna try and pull the code(s) myself.
