if the problem is legitimate, the light will come back. the point of resetting it? sometimes the computer registers something as a problem that really isn't a problem. (technically speaking, there is an analog-to-digital converter onboard the computer that converts various continuous voltages to discrete voltages, and if a particular voltage is right smack on the threshold of a discrete value, it might consider the voltage to be to be bad and cause a CEL.)
example: i got an EVAP code not too long ago, so i bought some high quality gas, made sure the gas cap was on good and tight, and reset the code. it hasn't returned and it probably won't... just one of those random voltage things.
