auto trunk open?
I think this is one of those age old questions that I have seen circulating the org. However, I have never seen a good reply to this question. I would like to know the answer too so I can finally pop my trunk and shut my door without the trunk closing.
i used an old hood shock.

there's the thread i made when i did it. if you watch the video (requires quicktime) you'll notice my trunk doesn't quite open all the way. but everything that i can actually fit inside the trunk gets in without too much trouble.

I have a 96 Se.. when I had the wing on the trunk, when the trunk release button is pressed, the trunk would simply "prop open", meaning, the trunk is unlocked but not fully open..
Now with the wing off, the trunk swings open whenever the release button is pressed...'
I personnaly don't want the trunk to fully swing open ( in case of rain/snow)...

If anyone would like to trade thier tension bars (you must have a GXE or GLE with no spoiler, since I believe all SE's came with spoilers) with me, PM me.
Your trunk will open all the way, and mine will open too! Win win situation.
I made a simple mod for this purpose exactly. I bought some heavy-duty tie-down elastic cables (bungee cords--the ones with the hooks) and stuck one hook on the trunk arm at the end, wrapped the slack and tightened with a zip-tie, then fastened the other hook through a small hole in the top of the inside trunk roof. Although you can see the bungee, it does not get in the way, it's adjustable to whatever tension you wish, and it's inexpensive. The cords I have are 18" I believe; the perfect length.
Where is this info coming from where the torison bars are different for different models? I have removed them on several different models with spoiler and without and they looked the same. I still have them laying around so i'm going to double check.

i had a brand new jetta courtesy car once and it opned all the way, its cool, but think about in the winter or when its raining and you accidently hit the button, or hit the trunk open button while getting out of the car, happens quite a bit to me, and luckil my trunk barely looks like its open. one time i hit the trunk release button when i was getting out of the car and lucikily it didnt open all the way or my trunk would have looked like a swimming pool in the morning

Low-Res for easy streaming, night shot but you get the idea:

One bungee cord strategically placed on each side for total of 2 bungee cords. Closing trunk is not difficult. Tension is decided by owner and is adjustable at any time by wrapping cord around trunk support arm until desired tension is achieved.
