1st gear grinding, leaking transmission

So,

yesterday my car started making a grinding noise for about a second when starting from a stop in 1st gear. my dad thought it might be a sign of low transmission fluid, and when I got under the car to check the level, didn't even get the cap out before i noticed the transmission was wet on teh bottom, and there was already a small spot forming on the street where it was parked.

So.. my transmission is obviously leaking and low on fluid at this point.

I just had my clutch done at the dealer in march.. so I plan on calling them tomorrow and telling them they screwed something up. but.. will they just use the age of the car (it's a 96) and the 5 month time-frame against me (i've put 7,000 miles on it) and deny any responsibility? if they do should I contact Nissan directly? or is it really most likely just a coincidence?

(and this is just one of the few/many things giving me trouble with the car all of a sudden.. i'm ready to get rid of it and find something else)

I have basically every symptom for everything that can go wrong with tranny. (changing it in two days) That grinding is prolly the diff bearing rattling around on take off. At low speeds it rattles more, at high speeds it doesn't move as much(it's a noise that brings tears to my eyes)... but it might be something else for you.

mine was doing something similar but i had a constant grinding noise, very audible in first and second gear while going slow. Transmission went maybe 3 months later.

youve put 7000 miles on the car since they worked on it. they will most deffinatly deny it. plus, if it was something they did you would have noticed it sooner. 7000 miles/5 months is quite a long time for a leak to be dripping, even a slow leak. so my guess is something happened in the last 5 months other then what they did.

but hey man, stick it out! my max gave me many troubles too at the begining but now shes a champ. oh, and trust me on this(i made this mistake)...if u think the transmission needs work, TAKE IT TO A SHOP NOW. dont keep driving it until it sh*ts the bed completely. it will be MUCH cheaper if u get it in the shop before hand.

took the plug out today and tranny fluid started coming out as soon as i started to remove the plug (my car was not quite level), so even though there's a small leak, i'm not low on transmissin fluid yet..

dealer can't get me in till monday (they're short-staffed this week) so I guess i'm going to avoid driving it till then

Unless you're seriously rich, I wouldn't take it to the dealer.

Best advice was from Dave in the other leaking tranny thread right now. Take it off yourself and take it to a transmission shop for a rebuild.

I'm away at school right now.. so don't have the means to really do anything myself.. and I also need my car every day (right now i'm depending on my roommates). i also don't trust any places around here.. the last time I took to a guy (who even specialized in nissan's.. his dad had started the place like 50 years ago) i got screwed over
