i read the howto, where it says to use rim paint. I was thinking of using krylon plastic paint. Just wondering what types all of you have used? I am going to paint them black but i dont want it to be glossy so most likely a flat black. Going to paint the vents, trim around the handles and switches, etc

 

you can use any spray paint you want, just prep it well and throw some clear on it at the end.

 

im debating the clear as that may make it shiney/glossy and it wont match the console

 

you can get a flat clear coat. Most glossy clear coats aren't that glossy anyways. If you don't do the clear, it's going to get scratched really easily.

Just do many light coats and you'll be all set.

 

Yeah you need a clear coat wether you want one or not. If you dont you'll be repainting in a few weeks. I used SEM paint and regular clear. None shine and it came out great.

 

those are some original pictures. I recently did the top vents, door handle trim, and made new door inserts to replace the carpeted ones. Looks great in person.

 

I used vinyl and fabric stuff that said it was made for dash kits...my @$$. I prepped it like crazy and most turned out ok, but some of them ended up like crap. I've redone my center dash piece (the one with the clock) and the shift **** (manual) peice three times now, and i've sanded it so many times it looks like crap. Anyone want to give me or sell me those two peices??

I used the krylon metallic silver paint (about 6 coats) and then used 10 coats of clear! It's time consuming, but the outcome is strong and the pieces don't scratch at all. You have to really hit the pieces to scratch them. Make sure you use an automotive adhesion promoter first, it will make your life easier!

 

was it regular krylon or the plastic specific stuff?

 

oh yes definatly get adhesion promoter that stuff = life in this project.

 

It was just metallic silver (not specifically for plastic). If you use the adhesive promoter, you don't need the paint for plastic. The paint is pretty strong but the clear is where the real strength comes from!

I agree with all those who said Clear is a MUST. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all.

 

yeah sorry about the pics. cardomain pics wont show up anymore for some reason. You dont need the plastic paint if you'er using primer first.
