I looked up the 0-60 for both, and they are around 6.7 seconds each. My friend (with the auto 5th gen) keeps saying that he will spank me , but I think if i shifted right, I could keep up with him and maybe even win. Not to mention his car is butt ugly, IMO. What do you guys think? talking about stock vs stock here.

 

Please don't pick on the styling of a Maxima, Maxima was, is and always will be a great car. As for numbers, the '00 Maxima auto WILL NOT do 0-60 in 6.7 seconds stock, its closer to 7.5-8.0 seconds. Thats the 5 speed that does it that fast. If you are a good driver, you too can get about 6.7 0-60, but expect more in the range of 7-7.5 seconds depending on your setup. Race him and see what happens.

I really didn't think there was a big difference in acceleration between 4th and 5th gen, so you should have no problem taking him easy if you drive stick even fairly well.

 

I would give the nod to the 5sp from 0-80mph or so, then the top end and the 222hp of the 00 might help the auto start gaining/pulling on you.

My friend and I, both stock (except I had an intake) both dropped into 3rd gear on the freeway, slowed down to 40mph, then both nailed it at the same time up to about 75-80mph (we had our cell phones so we could go at the same time). Both times, he pulled less 1/2 to 2/3 a car length on me. We were both 5sp and I had 130,000 miles and he had 8,000 miles.

In your comparo, it was a 5th gen auto against a 4th gen 5sp, so I'd give the nod to the 4th gen 5sp max at the 1/4 mile...
