Up all nite in the rain doin my Suspension

like the title says i was up all night doin my suspension wit my boy. It is now 7:30am and we just got breakfast. But the whole night we were workin on it. from 1am to 6am. we did the front with LOTS of WORK. But the rear really did a number on us. WE took out the wheel and was tryin to take out the bottom screw that holds the strut. But the Nut is covered by some metal flange. And when i turn the screw to loosen, the screw and the nut moves at the same time. Not allowing me to loosen the screw. The area is too small to get a wrench to hold the nut in place. If only the metal flange wasnt there. We tried to rachet the bolt off but the nut spins along wit the bolt and the flange is covering the bolt. (DItto in a different way) Does anyone have this problem?? if do PLEASE help. my car looks rediculous with the front nice and lowered and the back just sticking up in the AIR... oh yea i have a 96max gle and installed or installing kyb struts/shocks with bomz springs. And one more thing, on the way back from the diner, we went powersliding in the rain, now the driver side makes a clunking noise whenever i turn, even when the car isnt moving and im just turning the steering wheel. anybody kno what that is???

Wedge a screw driver between the nut and the cage. Give it a slight tap with a hammer so it's jammed in there holding the nut. Position it so the nut spins down onto the blade when you back the screw out. That will hold the nut in place so you can unscrew the bolt from it.

TIP: You don't need a spring compressor to do the rears. They are not under much preload at all. Take the top nut off and it will pop up about 2 inches. You can even put it back together with just somebody pushing down on the top while you catch the nut.

clunking or creaking? do you feel anything in the wheel when this happens?

What you're describing seems steering system related but I've had a clunking before after I abused the thing. Try kicking the wheel to see if you have an freeplay.

the 1st time around is always a bish. But if you keep at it you'll get so good. Its actually really easy compared to many other setups.

yea we did try to wedge a screwdriver, but it didnt work.. it just spun without a care.. and we dont need spring compressors, just use the "clampy thing" to hold the spring in place. yes a lil shot out but it lessens the force . right now we are workin on taking apart the starter to grease it. anyone got any pointers on how to take the starter apart?? thanks... guys.. dedication.. yea.. i guess... i mean.. i kinda sick of bouncing up and down..my first car.. "the LA boata" the black old caddy with 5 ciggerate lighters bounced like that....

did you replace the nut with one that has enough depth so it locks into the clamp like metal piece that is on the axle..

this was a problem i faced.... apparantly when the shocks were replace before the person didnt put the right one back in so the nut and bold would turn togheter...

atleast you had a friend ... well i had a lift and shop but it took me from 9:30am to 6:30pm cause of that nut which relaly slowed it down..

but the satisfaction of doing it yourself is something that you can be proud of.

for the rears that flange is suppost hold the bolt in place so you can just use a 17mm socket and break the bolt free. But if it is spinnin the wedged screw driver technique should work.

WD-40 or equivalent can help, if not add some heat. Worse comes to worse, cut the bolt off and replace it.

I had the same problem... I welded the nut in place, You just have to be careful you do not get weld debris in side the nut on the threads. Also, getting in there with a Mig was also a little difficult, and had to redweld twice or three times, but eventually works. Time sounds right, I only had that happen on one side and it took me 3 hours to get it finished.

what do you mean??? please explain...sorry i am a noobie my friend did most of the work.. all i did was go... WOW ur goood.. and screamed like a lil girl everytime something sounded like it was goin to break..

yea i am goin to take it to my mechanic to tell him to weild it probably.. but cutting it off seems MUCH easier..still trying to picture it in my head.. what would happen after i cut the bolt... but damn that clunking noise is terrible.. everytime i turn theres a clunk.. now everytime i go thru a bump.. there is a Slight clunk.. i hope my wheel wont just fall off on me while im driving... another lesson i learned.. DONT go POWERSLIDING if u want ur car to last longer and dont wanna spend too much money on it..thanks guys.. im goin to post be4 and after pics after im done...btw.. the front looks SWEeT

I hope you changed the strut bearing and top hat or that clunking will still be there
