which tranny?

next week ill be buying a new transmission (5 Spd) and my choices are :

A. 2k1 open diff with 28k-cost 880 2hrs away from my location.

or

B. 1999 infiniti i-30 LSD 90k- cost 1050 shipped to the door.

which one should i get. its going to be mated with a 01 clutch setup and a fidanza flywheel.

both sound like a good deal, thats why its a hard choice.

thanks for looking

so from what the votes say, go with option "A", any reason why? is the open diff 01' tranny, better than the 99' LSD tranny?

Less miles, less money, unless ur real serious you dont need an LSD, it never hurts to have one, but u dont need it

I would agree with what kcryan says (A) just because of the lesser miles and less money is hard to beat, for the averge max driver a limited slip is nonessential but if thats what you ultimately want go for it.

LSD is nice. But 1050 is expensive. I got one for $695 shipped! Oh wait... That was an accident (salvage yard didn't know that ES maxima = LSD tranny?)... lol. still... Jsutter got one for like $700 as well I think (something like that?)

as horrible as it is to leave one mark!!! ooooo.... unless you're racing or driving in snow alot, LSD isn't worth that extra 200 bucks, and 70000 miles. It is nice but don't buy an lsd tranny unless you can find one a little cheaper. (least I wouldn't...)

less miles is a great advantage. but i couldnt pass up an LSD. i do so much auto-x and loads of snow in the city

i would do some more searching, talking to salvage yards etc. unless you need it asap :P then its all up to the way you drive possibly even the weather if ya know what i mean.

seeing as ive dealt with finding 5spd tranmissions, except my choices are all VLSD. Buy the one with the longest warrenty, that will give full cash refunds not credits. I bought a tranny with unknown amount of kms, for 550CAD, it has the VLSD, but hey guess what when i installed it the diff was fawked up. I had to literally fight the owner to get my money back not a BS credit with them. I got the money back bought a 98 VLSD tranny with about 50,000 miles(80000kms). Its installed and the car is running perfect, no play in the tranny(yet...) no leaking, no weird noises or anything. I paid 1000CAD for the transmission and im just lucky i could get my money back.

About your choices, the 01 is obviously newer, lower kms, cheaper, but i also heard that it sits about 1 inch or so farther back? No clue if its true or not. Its a hard choice but i think id go for the I30 VLSD. Also if you go for the 01 bring an axle put it in the tranny(bring a pry bar to get it out) and try wiggle it up and down, if it moves at all then do not buy the tranny. If you get hte I30 its kinda late because by the time you can check your already stuck with it.

the 01 shifter does sit about an inch or less further. The only difference that I noticed was that when its in first, it looked like it was in neutral. I caught myself a couple of times trying to frantically open the door to get it into gear- thinking i'd left it in neutral to have her roll back and hit something Also, now that I think of it, you do essentially lose the use of the 1/2 half of the cup holder as second and fourth would hit anything there. Small inconviniences I figure..

Sounds like I need to go 2001, I installed the Pace Setter STS (IIRC, been awhile), and to keep my shifter from hitting the shifter trim in first I had to shorten the throw as much as possible. Would be great to get mine back an inch or two, as right now in 2nd gear, it looks like neutral and neutral looks higher than first normally does.

All things equal, I had to vote for #1. The deck seems stacked in this case...28k newer open diff> 90k older LSD

LSD would be nice but if it don't make dollaz it don't make sense.

UPDATE:

so i drove to canada to get the tranny this morning, cost $960 cdn.
so i exchanged the $860 in cash i had and got back, $926 cdn. i had $18 cdn already in my pocket, so i go to the yard paid $942.26 cdn and $18 us. on my card.

to make things better i got back $45 for my GST at the Duty Free at the border.

so for a 2000 5 spd tranny open diff with 22,000 miles i paid $810 US.

I'd say that a good deal.
