Headlight Automatic Turnoff

Does anyone know how this would be possible? Rainy fall weather, lights on during the day, and I keep leaving them on and am fearing for my battery. I doubt this is in the mod how to's but was just wondering any ideas or general how to's I'd need to know to get it done. thanks

If the car is running when you leave them on, no prob bob, your alt should cover it, if you leave the car and leave them on, how do you miss the BEEP BEEP BEEP?

Yeah I don't have a beep beep either, and the other day it was daytime and raining so they were on, but when I shut it off I didn't notice the light =/

Regardless of the hassle I still would really like this feature, but I lack the technical know how to do it, something that wires the lights through the alarm? so that the acc needs ot be on for them to turn on?

... well depends how crazy u wanna get with this..
i plan on making a few units after i make a damm trim for my OEM navi install (which many people didnt show interest in, i hate you all)

anyway back to what im saying... this is the logic.. or idea behind the whole system...

your lightin switch runs of a ground or 12v signal i have to read up on which but one or the other (when u turn the **** to the on position it completes the circuit) in which the relay gets the signal to turn on the headlights.

anyhow all you have to do is find the wire which feeds into the switch cut it and put the dource of that wire to a ground or 12v lline that comes on with the ACC or ON.. the radio is a great site for this 12v line and hte cigg lighter is a great source for the grond cause it only comes on when the key is in teh ignition.

now we can get complicated with this and add a sunload sensor which would only complete the switch when the car is on/ and the light outside is low. but this would have an AUTO switch which would allow me to set it to auto if desired.. and also set up a line from the keyless entry to a momentary to constant relay set up which will turn on the lights when i hit the unlock on the alarm and will turn of the lights when i get to the car and open the door. (THIS WILL BE MY INSTALL)

i have thought out the system but .. jsut no time to implement. but im shure this semester will be a little easier in school so ill have time for some tinkering... = )

ill make diagrams for everybody when its done so we can all enjoy the fruits of labor.

I think if you want to do something easy and effective you have 2 options.

1) get a battery buddy. If you do leave your lights on and your battery gets drained, it will cut off power directly from the battery before your battery is totally drained. You reset the breaker and you're able to start your car.

2) Wire a relay in-line to your headlight GROUND wires. Use the ACC wire directly from the ignition switch to switch the relay on and off. When you take the key out of the ignition, the circuit is not complete and your lights go off.

Its pretty easy. You can get a sample relay diagram at www.partsexpress.com.

The battery buddy is like 50 bucks. I know cop cars use them and they are very effective.

I'm gonna look into this and see what I can do, I'm ok with electrical stuff but Its the whole finding the crap in the car that I suck at

http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...prod/prd42.htm Have a look at this module. It is a combined auto headlight, retained power and dome light control. You may be able to adjust the headlight sensor so it comes on as soon as it gets dark so you will not need to use the headlight switch - no dead battery. I have not used it.

If you want your lights to turn off with your ignition, You can do this...
How can I make my headlights turn off with the ignition?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Easy easy. Here is what you do.

You will need an automotive relay, some primary wire and a fuse holder with a 5 amp fuse.

Remove the bottom portion of the steering column trim and the bottom dash panel. Locate the grey/yellow wire in the steering column (this is the headlight wire). Cut this wire and solder/butt connect a legnth of primary wire to each end.(soldering is much better)

Attach those two wires to the 87 and 30 poles on the relay(does not matter what wire is connected to which pole).

Next, connect the 85 pole of the relay to chassis ground.

Then you need to locate the black/yellow wire in the cars ignition harness(located in a loom under the dash. Look for the loow leading to the ignition switch) strip this wire with a razor knife (do not cut) then wrap wire around the bare ignition wire and solder the connection. After you solder this wire wrap tape around it very well and put a ziptie over the tape, this is also the wire that gets the inline fuse holder and 5 amp fuse.

Finally attach this wire to the 86 pole on your relay and there you go. for myself being an MECP certified installer this would take 30 minutes or so, the average novice with moderate ability could do this in an hour to an hour and a half.

Along these same lines, since I'm a great fan of the safety benefits of daytime running lights, is there a relatively simple (as in plug-n-play) upgrade for the 4th gen Maximas? I'm under the impression that the Canadian (and possibly other countries) Maxima has daytime running lights.

Good call man, good call. I didn't even bother with the stickies on this one because I figured it was such an abstract mod

The only drawback in this setup is that you lose the ability completely to use your headlights without the key. If that does not bother you, pass go and collect $200.

An even BETTER solution would be to purchase a timed relay that would function in place of the existing one, with power being cut out after X seconds from the time the key was removed from the ignition switch. You would connect THIS NEW relay to the existing relay for power, and then connect the other lead of this NEW relay to the ACC. The timed relay is essentially a capacitor.
