I have a 96SE 5spd.
This weekend when I tried to start, the starter would engage for about .5s, turning over engine but then kicks out. I can still here the starter turning if I leave the key engaged.

I let the engine run a few minutes after push starting down the drive...shut it off and the starter then worked fine.

Any ideas what is wrong...

The solenoid or the starter drive (a/k/a "the Bendix") is failing. If you like to do your own "wrenching" you might be able to replace just the failing part. If you pay a professional to do your repairs it isn't cost-effective to repair a starter motor. Replace it.
