Clutch prob? RPM increase w/o acceleration
Clutch prob? RPM increase w/o acceleration
I just want to verify that the problem is indeed the clutch. This is on a 98 Max SE
While driving if I apply very minimal gas it drives fine and will accelerate accordingly. If I press harder on the gas the RPM will increase but the acceleration does not. After a second the RPM will drop back down and the car will accelerate. I am pretty sure this is the clutch.
I have seen other posts and so I know if it is I should replace it with 00-01 parts, I just want to make sure that is what the problem is.
I guess I will ask this in here too so as to not clutter the board with numerous posts.
My gas pedal sticks. It is fine until approx 1/2 to 2/3 of the way down when it sticks. If you go beyond there the gas pedal will not release past that point unless you kind of stomp it and it pops back up.
A little more info about the car is in order I suppose. It was given to me by my father. It has 225K mi on it. Despite the mileage I think it is worth working on. He bought it new and so I have the rare insight into knowing that the only thing that has ever broken on the car was the alternator. I also know that it has been well cared for and maintained and that about 90% of the miles are highway.
The alternator story is as follows. It died while I was driving home from school a few months ago. I made it home on the battery. When I got home I found out that there was a recall on the alternators which applied to that car. So, I took it to Nissan and got the alternator replaced for free. However, soon thereafter is when the clutch slipping thing started.
I guess it is either its time or Nissan got the gas pedal stuck and in order to avoid the ensuing locked gas pedal pushed the clutch pedal in and messed it up.
So, if anyone can advise me on either of those two problems I would be greatly appreciative. If any more info is needed I will be happy to provide it.
Thanks.

info
i would say that it is your clutch, they can go out two different ways, loose or tight, i have experienced both, if you hit he gas hard instead of accelereation or tires spinning the clutch disc doesn't grab and it spins, you should smell a funny burnt odor too.
i had my pedal stick on a couple of other cars, can't say that it has ever been anything other than something in the way, check for loose wiring around the pedal shaft, might help, might not. i guess those things are lubricated as well, does it click or squeek? i am just guessing on the pedal thing...

Get the gas pedal fixed ASAP, that can be very dangerous.
Check the cable for any binding.
Check the linkage around the throttle body.
Check the return spring.
Make sure the linkage isn't hitting the screw on your intake piping clamp.

Yes, I did call around. Everywhere I called refused to use a clutch I supplied and they all wanted to charge 300+ for the parts.
I am gonna check the regional forums to see if anyone can suggest someone local.
Also, I am not driving the car in this condition. I don't want to make the problem worse and/or hurt something else. The gas pedal thing I think I can do myself. If not I will have to pay someone on that too.

2. It's not even about how hard you beat on your clutch. It's about how much power you make. Even if you have a lot of mods, as long as you're running the stock engine with no supercharger or turbocharger and no nitrous, the 5th gen clutch kit will be fine no matter how you drive (unless you're a total idiot).

Trust me... With any non-3.5, non-FI, non-nitrous Maxima, it'd be really, really hard to be enough of an idiot that the 5th gen clutch wouldn't hold. And I don't just mean being bad at driving stick... I mean doing stuff like constantly riding the clutch, or doing clutch-slip launches from high RPMs.
Mind you, I'm only talking about how well the clutch grips. How long it lasts is definitely up to the driver.
