Is a lightened flywheel worth it?

I've been debating whether to get a Fidanza/Unorthodox flywheel or not, but I'm not sure if its worth it? I've heard that it makes your rpms run up a lot quicker. This one guy I know locally told me its not worth it... but I really dont know... Can anyone enlighten me whether its a good investment or not??

What have any of you experienced with it? Good or bad? (Performance wise)

Yeah, your car will rev quicker in neutral and pull harder in first and maybe second. Your engine will also feel like it carries less "inertia" in general, so you will also shed revs quicker and might be a little trickier when you're just starting in first.

I don't have one, so I can't tell you whether or not it's worth it.

is it worth it? no, does it make a difference? yes. i definately noticed a difference, but its not worth 350$. my car revs like a motorcylcle now, and i definately noticed a difference in 1st and second gear, which is what i want, in town driveability. it helps out more in the low speeds, and 0 - 60 which is what i want. i dont understand you guys you are obsessed with the MEVI, seeing as it only starts to help in 3rd and up really, because you can never go those speeds on the streets, except for merging, its just for better quarter mile times, aka: bragging rights, but the flywheel will basically help most down in 1st and 2nd.

I agree with the above post, although I can easily see the benefits of a MEVI or '00VI as well (even though I'm using neither). I'm using a Fidanza coupled with a Spec Stage 2+ clutch and here are my observations:

1) RPM's do rise more quickly,
2) 1st and 2nd gear acceleration seems considerably faster,
3) starting off in first is a little more tricky and there is some minor chatter,
4) RPM's fall considerably more quickly, which I LOVE!

yeah i know what you mean about the MEVI, but everyone says it REALLY helps in third gear and on, so i threw that in there

Its worth it if your trying to gain the most out of your vehicle.
If your looking for low cost mods that give a more noticable gain for the dollar then the flywheel should wait and look more into the Y pipe or ECu upgrade.
I hae one, and would do it again if I had to. You have to consider that in the end, the list of available mods soon comes to an end, and you will reach a point where mods will cost more and do a bit less.
As far as chatter goes, thats going to come from the clutch and not the flywheel.

Well I pretty much have all the basic bolts ons...TS ECU, y-pipe, UDP, intake, exhaust, ACT clutch... all i'm needing is the flywheel.. of course I have many more steps to have my car completely re-done like the 00vi or 3.5 swap... fuel upgrade, turbo...things like that...

I was just seeing if it would be wise for me to invest in it. From what I've been reading..and BTW thanks... it seems like the only improvement is towards torque, which my car does not lack... eventually I would buy it but I'm looking for top end gains right now...

I drove with one in my last car (93 Talon) and what pissed me off the most was stop and go driving or trying to find a parking spot.

I feel like acceleration/deceleration in my 96 SE is already jerky in 1st, a lightened flywheel wouldn't be worth it for me but it all comes down to personal preference and driving style. Like you guys were talking about, your list of basic mods runs out sometime.

you will love it. if you havent driven a car before and after a lightened flywheel install you dont know how much more fun they are. its less forgiving to mistakes made, but if you know how to drive thats not an issue. I havent gotten one for the max yet, but on my sr20 it would hit 8 grand (JWT ecu raised rev) before my foot hit the floor! reminded me of a motorcycle.

I put in a fidanza flywheel with no intension of ever doing this mod however, my clutch blew so harsh that my stock flywheel was not resurface-able. My fidanza was about 350 when a oem replacement at my local autozone was 400+ so why not. I noticed a slight gain in 1st and 2ed gear and a noticable difference when reving it up in neutral however when i installed this paired with my 5th gen clutch i have a squeeking noise right when i bring up my clutch pedal to put her into gear. I dunno if this is fidanza related, i believe my throwout bearing is malfunctioning even tho i replaced it?

Think of it this way...
Say you go to work everday and your job is to turn a wheel that weighs
50lbs.
Now imagine that one day you go to work and the wheel is suddenly 25lbs.
See what I mean?
just a thought, anytime you decrease rotating mass there will be benefits, but imo a lightened flywheel is not worth it unless you are a true enthusiast.
