time for a mevi!

i'm almost positive i'm buying a MEVI this week. Before i shell out the cash, which is reasonable, i had a few last minute questions. IS the harlam switch a must. there are a few posts saying that it doesn't work due to some solenoid and others saying it does. The kit i'm getting comes with it so i was jw. Secondly i wanted to know if the install is hard. does it bolt in or do i need to jimmy rig around my engine compartment. And lastly if there is anyone in CT-on the shoreline who has done the swap and would be willing to help it'd be appreciated. thanx guys

the harlam switch is not absolutely needed. i have done the swap already and its a nice increase in power up top, however it should be tuned for maximum performance. i have it set up where i can open it up whenever i want. i have it on a small push button switch in the car. a vacuum canister is needed, as well as a vacuum electric solenoid piece (cant remember the name exactly but available at any chevy dealership). the install was very straight forward, as long as you have some sort of mechanical skills, it shouldnt be a problem for you.

Harlan switches are know for failing, thats why most peole are using a summit switch. Yes you do need an rpm switch.

Unbolt the stock IM and put on the mevi, easy as that.

96turbo3.5 - You should really get an rpm switch so that your mevi opens at the correct time.

I never had a problem with the harlan switch, its not made for coil on cylinder mode, its never failed me, wire it to the tach screw on the back of gauge cluster should work fine

who says what the correct rpm is? ive read that some have it open in the 3k range and i think thats too low of rpm to have it open. personally i usually open it around 5k. these motors dont make torque down low. i like the long runner design for its torque but it lacks for up top power and that where the mevi should kick in, just before horsepower starts to drop off. and then again thats just my $.02

Well the install isnt too bad had to make a bracket for the emissions evap solonoid on top of the intake and you have one extra hole that you dont put a bolt in.. i used the summit switch and works good with the turbo..

set it wherever YOU feel like. i dont street race and i only hit 5k getting on the freeway 1-2 times. so either do the manual switch or run it wide open for a week and "feel" where your car kicks in the mevi. and set your rpm there.

thats what i did, and ive had no problems. but personally ive never liked the 5k idea, its not real safe to set it there as a daily driver, cause 5000 RPM in
3rd gear is around 85 MPH.

The reason you read 3k is becasue they were using a Summit rpm switch which is made for V8's. Setting it to 3K= 5K for us V6 Guys.

Setting it too low will actually hurt performance in the low end, even more so by running it wide open all the time.
To actually see the gain in the switch over look at some dyno graphs.
To really get the most out of the MEVI you should be going over 5k. If not then you were fine with the OEM manifold.
I dont see why its not safe to go over 5k, the redline is at 6500, if you have an ecu upgrade you can go even higher.
Many boosted guys go 7k easily on a day to day basis and are still running strong.
Now im not stating to daily drive around at 5k or above, but as a shift point.

The real way to find the most optimal setting for your car is to dyno, plain and simple.

100% agreed.
If you have the Summit switch you can use the 3k setting as a ballpark setting, and when on the dyno you can use the little screw on the switch to do the minor adjustments to either open a bit sooner or later to have a smooth pull on the dyno with no dips in the graph.
