Is the snap ring for the driver side axle suppose to go all the way around?

If any one could tell me if the snap right around the axle is suppose to go all the way around and fit tightly around it, I would greatly appreciately. This is because I took out my tranny last week and I pulled out the axles. But I when I looked at the snap ring around the drivers side axle it's not even tight and there is a sizable gap such that it doesn't wrap all the way around. Is it suppose to be this way. I don't mind replacing the snap ring, but the guy at autozone didn't seem to know what a snap ring is. And I can't seem to find the part in online sites.

snap ring is supposed to have a gap. as long as it sets down in the groove w/ just a little play it good to go.

Thanks, I probably just stretched it alittle when I was pulling the axle out. I'll try to bend it inwards a little.

Don't bend it. It's supposed to be loose on the axle groove. The point is that it snaps outward into another groove on the inside of the differential. In fact, if you look carefully and center the ring, the middle of the ring will line up with the OD of the axle spline.

The ring is supposed to be like that. That way it "snaps in." While you have the axles out inspect to see if the boots are cracked and for any axle grease. If there is, good time to replace them.
