I need to replace the ECU in my 97 auto maxima. if i just get another one from a 97 auto, will that be good enough, or do i need to be more specilic when selecting an ECU?

Use this chart, http://jimwolftechnology.com/wolfpdf/ECU-ID.PDF and if buy your ECU from www.car-part.com, they have reference #'s that correspond to the PDF.

Accordint to that chart, all 97 maximas had one Part # for the ECU. SO, if it's a 97 ecu, i should be good to go, correct?

I think there is a difference between Cali Spec and Fed Spec. IIRC.

On www.car-part.com, it will state whether it's cali or fed.. so with that in mind, make sure and check tranny type and fed/cali spec along with the P/N, but yes, JWT only has 1 P/N, so match it up.

I drive a 98 SE. Would it make a difference if I purchase the 96 or 95 ECU? Are there any gain differences?

Yes it would.

You will gain a CEL/SES light.

Yeah, those threads are mostly from the beginning of 04. That thread still stated that 99 don't have an ECU upgrade (JWT) option when now as of this year they do. In that same thread someone mentioned a 96 ecu will work with no problems or CEL. I believe they were speaking from experience.
