Leaking gear oil AGAIN!

Leaking gear oil AGAIN!
My max has already been through one 5 speed transmission due to worn bearings. The driver side axle had a lot of play in it and it spewed gear oil everywhere. I put in a used one about 15K ago (the tranny had 40K on it before that) and now I'm leaking gear oil again......This time though it is at the passenger side axle input though. Is this an indicator of the same differential bearing failure that happened to my last tranny??? The driver side axle sits in the transmission tight and doesn't leak. I don't know if the passenger side leaking could be the same failure. Please give some input if you have had to deal with these piece of trash 4th gen 5 speed junkboxes.

Doesn't sound like bad bearings. I would replace the seal and make certain you have a passenger side seal, and not drivers side (different sizes).
But this is one reason I'll never recommend a used tranny if it hasn't been taken apart for inspection first.

Can you confirm that bad bearings will normally present with the driver side seal leaking first? ....or does it matter which side leaks?

Bad bearings cause leakage because of runout. (Runout = the axle moving off-center). Every seal is stretched some around the sealing surface of the axle. If there is a little runout, the pre-stretch in the seal ensures the seal keeps touching the axle all the way around. Once the runout gets to a certain point, the stretching gets to be more than the seal can cover for, and oil leaks. By this point, your bearings have worn such that the preload is gone, and even more wear has taken place such that the diff actually can wobble around inside the tranny case.
The passenger side axle is supported by an extra bearing, so that it's held nearly perfectly in line. The drivers side axle just hangs out, so it will tilt downward and increase the runout substantially. It doesn't matter which side the carrier bearings go bad on, it results in the whole diff wobbling around inside the case and creating play in the axles.

What the shop wrote on my ticket was that they replaced the axle seal and "found some scratches on sealing surface. Lightly sanded to take any burrs off. No grooves found on axle shaft."
Dave, your explanation helps me a little bit as far as understanding what that jargon means. I guess I just have to wait and see if it starts leaking again. I have a 12/12K warranty on the seal so if this tranny is on its way out it should start leaking again before that.
The tech at nissan knows all about the history of these POS 5 speed gearboxes. Some poor sucker was in there today in fact buying a brand new transmission to put in his maxima. The tech said he "checked" the bearings and they seem to be in good condition. Who knows if they actually did that or not. I won't put another tranny in this biznitch. I'll light it on fire first

This used trans that is in there was supposedly out of a 99 but take a look at the position of my shifter now.
1st gear:
And 2nd gear:
I thought only 5th gen 5 speeds caused the shifter to position itself like this. First gear used to be much further up and obviously 2nd gear was not almost in a horizontal position before with my old trans.
