Best way to determine the Tranny type?
I have a 1997 SE 5-spd and the tranny is getting ugly. Basically you can hear the bearings inside getting sloppy and making a whirring noise as you accelerate. i just put in a 5th gen clutch (NOT re-man) and brand new flywheel as my clutch basically imploded. My tranny still makes the noise and my mechanic said the problem is the tranny. NOW, he located some used trannys that hold some warranty and certified testing and in working condition per the seller. His question is whether it is limited slip.
What is the best way to determine whether it is limited slip or not? Is there a code somewhere to tell me that or can I perform a proven test to tell me which type to get for this car?
Thanks: e3

on the vin plate on the firewall in the engine bay on the passenger side. if it has a V at the end of the trans code it is limited slip, if it has an A it is open diff.
if your car was brand new in the united states it doesn't have limited slip. no 4th gens in the states were offered with limited slip, only in canada.

the part will be bout 100 bux....virtully no work cuase u have to pull the axles out anyway....its a direct swap.....and changing axle seals takes about 2 min with the tranny out of the car already.....u may as well upgrade to a 5th gen clutch too

Well, i just swapped in a 5th gen clutch 1 week ago, then with the car running the tranny problem was apparent. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to diagnose the tranny problem prior to the old clutch blowing up. But I do have a 1 week old 5th gen (non re-manufactured) clutch in. Nice and smooth. i have not gotten on it since I am afraid to stress the tranny at this point. Once it is broken in and the tranny is fixed, I plan to give it a good ride. My mechanic will be doing the tranny swap, so it may be hard to convince him of the lim-slip + different axle combo. He will swear to some voiding of his warranty or some crap.

Can you guys hook me up with a Nissan or autozone part # if i decide that route? Also any feedback on whether trying to find the limited slip is really worth it? I am looking for a nice proven used one.
Anyone in MA have one?

The limited slip definitely helps in situations where one wheel likes to spin. This is usually mid-turn on a low-traction surface. For racing and winter driving it's great because you can use more throttle in a turn. With an open diff one wheel just spins when you try that.
