ok, i think my tranny might be starting to slip, but i've heard several different definitions of what slipping actually is. can someone who TRULY know what tranny slip is please explain it to me i would greatly greatly appreciate it
also what are the general symptoms of a tranny thats beginning to go bad? i don't mean "when it doesn't shift gears" lol. i'm looking for warning signs to fix the problem before my tranny actually $hits the bed. mine is doing the following:

- shifting kind-of hard from 1st to 2nd
- doesn't like the mid-range throttle downshift. (not WOT, the mid-open throttle. idk what its called lol.) it doesn't really like doing it and the RPM's kind-of drop a litttle for a second.
- very sluggish mid-range power
- tranny overall just doesn't seem to pull as hard through gears as it used to. like if i put it in drive and stomp it from a dead stop, it's not nearly as peppy as it used to be.

is what i described a tranny problem or could it be something else? maybe fuel pump? my car has 146,000 miles on it and it has stock engine and tranny. any info would be hugely appreciated. thanks guys! always trust you!

youre tranny sounds like mine. and mine has already been rebuilt.

my symptoms when i knew my tranny was going was pretty much just hard shifts. when i accelerated, it would slam into gear, rather than be smooth. even now when i stomp on it, it sometimes slams into gear. making me believe the tranny shop didnt fix everything.

you can take it to aamco and theyll do a free diagnosis for you. take it from one who make the mistake before, getting it checked out now before it completely ****s the bed will be a MUCH cheaper fix.

I had a 97 Taurus (it was GIVEN TO ME, I would NEVER, EVER buy anything like that, not even for a winter car. Please don't hurt me.) anyway, i started noticing tranny slip about a year before I stopped driving it. It's still going (father drives it as a beater now) and all that we did was change the tranny fluid. It's smooth as long as you keep your foot out of it, but if you stomp on it its a whole different story. My advice would be to try changing the fluid, maybe flushing it. If thats no good then rebuild it, or like scrhale said, get a FLIPPIN 5SPEED.

OH, and everyone I've talked to who has gone to Aamco has had a bad experience with them, so I wouldn't suggest there.

Unless you are time constrained, it shouldn't cost too much more in parts to swap to 5 SPD. It is just very time consuming if you are undertaking the project yourself.
