EGR problems....worth fixing?

I am really tired of staring at that yellow light guys, i have the 0302 code which is EGR insufficient or excessive flow detected. What does that mean first off, and how in the H*** do I fix this.. Or is it even worth the trouble? I've cleared it twice and it comes back after a day or so

Go here:

and download the FSM for your year. Then go to section EC page 254.

the two different times it kept coming up on my car was a plugged hole in the upper intake where the egr tube bolts, and then because the small 2" vacuum line that runs vertical directly underneath the "thingy that looks like a horn" was dry rotted so bad it had gaping holes. My buddies '96 also had the upper intake hole get plugged, and I think others here have as well, might want to just get replacing your upper intake gasket out of the way (depending on how many miles you have) they all start to leak around 80-120k because nissan screwed up somewhere along the way during engineering and weren't able to use two bolts that were supposed to be there, you can check that egr hole for blockage at the same time.

I have been battling the same problem for quite sometime...and have read up on it extensively...worth fixing? Probably not, especially since i guessed wrong and spent 100 dollars on an EGR valve and the light still didnt go off...the light is a pain in the as* but, it really doesnt effect performance, milage or life of the car...unless you can't pass inspection..

the light might not effect performance, but certain problems with the egr can deffinitly effect on performance.

Sounds like a lot of rounded off bolt heads or frozen parts to me... Oh and not to mention cussing and cut knuckles

I got code 0302 last month. I read the manual and just about every post I could find on it here. Despite all the good posts and pictures, I couldn't find and inspect all of the suspect parts. I cleared the code anyway and so far it hasn't come back. I was due for an emission inspection soon so I went ahead and got one done - luckily I passed and I'm good for another year. I'm expecting the check engine light to come back on any day. Has anyone had this code go away on its own, or is it just a matter of time before that yellow light comes back to haunt me?

wrong. It has nothing to do with the EGR valve. stop giving wrong information. It is the small EGR pipe tha tmust be cleaned. no need to remove the plenum or anything else except the small EGR pipe. there are plenty of writeups on how to do it. resetting the light will do nothing. and there is nothing you can pour in to clean it. while doing it, it makes sens to to a TB cleaning and an IAC Valve cleaning. whole process takes abotu 2 hours if you have done it a few times and about 4 hours if it is your first. you will need a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 5mm socket, set of vise grips, a long pry bar (or large flathead), a bunch of carb cleaner (Berrymans is best at cleaning) and a whole lot of patience.
