Push Button Start

I know that there was a long thread on this in the past. There was a write up of how to wire up a push button start. My ignition switch is fed up that it takes me 5mins just to try to find the spot to start the car. I want to juse wire a push button start where you have to put key on "ON" then push the button. I have searched for the last 2 days an didn't come up with anything. Anyone with any information please chip in!

Why not replace the switch? Putting a push button in requires butchering the dash, adding a relay, etc............that will do a lot for any resale value....

yeah good luck selling a car with a 3.5 swap. I rather do the push button switch even with the hassle. adds to the "wow" factor lol along with the 3.5

This is all off memory......

You need 2 relays, 1 momentary switch, 12 gauge wire, 18 gauge wire, and some crimp on terminals. Get the wiring diagram for your car, find the 2 starter wires, connect each to relay pin 87 using separate relays (use the 12 gauge wire). Connect 12v+ to pin 30 on each relay (again with 12 gauge wire). Connect the ignition (hot with key on) wire to pin 85 on each relay (18 gauge wire here. Then run a wire from pin 86 to the switch then to ground(18 gauge again).

sounds like a pretty good memory!

wow.

Anyway, I like the idea, but I'd like something I can push momentarily and have it disengage the starter automatically when it's started up instead of having to hold it the entire duration of a few cranks. Seems a bit ridiculous, I guess, but I'm all about subtle things/details.

I suggested this in a random thread, but isn't it possible to get some sort of proximity sensor and keep it on us (ie. our keychain) and then wire a push start. Basically if you aren't within range of the proximity sensor then your push start doesn't work. I stole this idea from the new Miata's. You have to carry that card around and then the key just sits in the ignition.

On a side note, if you wire a push start then do you lose the ACC part of your ignition?

you don't lose anything....you have to put the key in the ignition and turn it to "on" and then push the button.

is there anyway to do the push button with two switches for the "acc" and "on" positions? or is the chip and all that deals with that not bypass-able?

The immobilizer system isn't easily disabled, that's the entire point of it.

You could do what you're saying, but the key would still have to be in the ignition (or the chip in close proximity to the NATS reader, if you wanted to dig the chip out and leave it taped on there). That's all to start the engine, of course. If you're not worried about that, then go to it.

thanks man... you wouldn't happen to know what wires it is that go to those points and the ignition? the schematic says somethin bout more than one wire from the cylinder to some relay and from there to the starter

What schematic are you looking at?

Look at the wiring diagrams in the FSM, they explain everything.

It's not this forum specifically, you can find an FSM for most any vehicle.

Factory Service Manual.

Search FSM, you'll find it.

Or, look at my sig.

The ignition switch has 6 pins.

Pin 1 is B+ in, W/PU - found on EL-11, EL-12
Pin 2 is ACC output, W/L - found on EL-12
Pin 3 is the primary IGN circuit, B/R - found on EL-12
Pin 4 is the secondary IGN circuit, R/Y - found on EL-14
Pins 5 and 6 are the two start wires, B/W and R/L respectively - found on EL-14.

All it takes is a little looking through the pages, you'll find what you need.

Also if you google for a remote start install (or search here), it'll show you what all of the wires are and their colors. Or search here for ignition switch pinout, you'll also find it.

The page numbers and wire colors are specific to the '99, other years FSMs will have different page numbers and may or may not have different wire colors.
