Intake Manifold

How hard is it to take off the upper intake manifold to cleanm out the carbon for the EGR system? I keep getting a code for the EGR valve malfunction even though I put on a new EGR valve.

Please someone help me. I'm tired of seeing my check engine light come on again after clearing the codes. I'm not willing to give the Stealership $270 dollars to do it for me.

Well you can do the job. You'll need a torque wrench to torque the correct weight back to the bolts but it shouldnt be too difficult. Do you have a Haynes manual?

Those will suffice. The FSM will probably do more for you than a Chiltons or Haynes ever will.

Ok well go into that and see about removing the intake manifold. As long as you have the tools and the knowledge of what you're doing you should be able to do it.

Where'd you get your FSM Tatanko?

phatg20.net

However, any time I've tried to download it from there, it's missing the EC (engine control) section. I had to get that particular section from another member.

It's just labeled EC on the list of sections. It has to deal with the ECU, sensors, etc. Drop me an email at pmitchell1@gmail.com and I'll send it your way.

I've done 4 and it's really not that bad, the hardest part is getting at the back bolts for the egr and the manifold brackets, it's alot easier if you have a (10mm?? & 12mm??) gear wrenches. Use a 3m scuff pad and then brake cleaner and a rag to clean all of the surfaces. Other than that it's just simply disconnecting of clips, wires, hoses, and brackets, just be gentle on that wiring harness

I think the hardest part is getting the coolant line off the intake manifold in the rear. Its best if you can get needle nose plyers or 45degree needle nose plyers. That should help with taking the clamps off the coolant line. Everything else is just simply unbolting or removing a hose hear and there.

Did you replace manifold gasket or use RTV sealant or original? Thanks.

Use a new gasket. They are extremely cheap at Autozone, Advance Auto, etc.

I just had my upper and lower manifold off a while back to get all the carbon out....just used some brake cleaner and a rag to wipe out the lower, then filled the upper manifold full of acetone and let it eat all the carbon out for a couple hours....runs like a champ! and I would have to agree with the others, the rear bolts on the manifold are a pain as well as the coolant lines upon re-install....hope you've got some patience, good luck!
