I have a Greddy Catback System and since its installation I have noticed that the entire system gets really hot. Now i am smart enough to know that the combustion inside the engine creates heat, but the tip of my muffler burned my leg this afternoon and seems to have a lot of black residue. I read that you can tell if your engine in running lean or rich by the temp of your exhaust. Is this true? Is this type of heat and black residue common. I never paid attention to the stock system. This system is in conjuction with a JWT popcharger. Any advise would be great. Thanks in advance.

The exhaust system does get hot all the way to the tip, even the stock one. The black stuff is carbon deposits. During idle, your car is normally running on the rich side.

i agree. the exhaust can get very hot. Exhaust tempratures can exceed a couple hundred of degrees F. Just be worried if you see bluish smoke and get fireballs out the back...not to mention the huge shotgun sound. THEN go to a mechanic QUICK.
