Power Steering Problem

I have a 1999 GLE with 187, 000 miles. Recently flushed the power steering fluid.

Last winter when the temp in the garage was below 50 deg, I would lose my PS while backing out. I flushed the PS fluid and all was good through out the summer. Now that it’s getting cold again the problem is back.

When I back and turn The PS dies for a second and then comes back. When I turn the wheel the other way it happens again. From then on it seems to work fine for the rest of the day. Right now this is only a nuisance and I can live with it if it doesn’t get worse.

Any ideas on what’s causing this? Should I just live with this till it dies or fix it before it strands me??

Are you properly flushing the system ?? Getting the car up on jack stands and turning the wheels back and forth a bunch of times to get the air out ?

how old is that PS fluid thats in there?

Bleeding the system:

with the car in the air. Full turn to the right, Left, right, left.
with car on the repeat above.

Use new fluid.

Your PSP could be going out. You can get a decent low mileage used pump for around $50, but installing it is a minor pain. As long as the goofy stuff on cold mornings doesn't increase or get worse, I'd leave it alone.

installation can be a major pain. It wasnt as bad as I though putting mine back on, but with a careful eye it wont take too long. . .

but I had my y pipe and pass axle out, so that made it muuch easier.

Replace the PS drive belt, it's probably glazed and slips when it's cold.
