Altenators keep blowing!! Need help!!

I'm on my 3rd altenator in 2 weeks (and it's only that long because i let the car sit for a week) I've tryed different tensions on the belt thinking maybe I over or under tightened but either way the same thing happens. It's good for about an hour then the voltage starts to drop(have a voltmeter function on my radio) and then the battery and brake light comes on. Has anyone had this this problem before? Does anyone know of somewhere I can get this checked out in or around canarsie/east flatbush area(brooklyn)? I'm tired of changing altenators anyone whose done it knows it's pain in the ****...Help please!!!!

Thanx guys, in advance.

PS. what is the alt.s fuse for? I was wondering because it's only a 7.5 amp and that seems kinda low for the altenator...

What kind of alternator did you buy? I know with some rebuilt ones they can be bad right out of the box. The place you buy them from can uaually test tehm before you buy them.

Probably the alternator is bad. What was the problem with the first two alternators ?

I bought them from Autozone. I had them tested and they passed before installing them. When I take them out and go back they fail the same test they passed the day before...the same thing keeps happening over and over. I'm lost, I don't know what it is or what to do.

Have the battery checked. Bad battery can short altenators. Fuse is for the brake and battery light. Make sure battery is fully charged when you install new altenator.

I just went through this, I just bought another Max. This one was in an accident. I finally replaced all the parts to get it on the road but figured the battery was good enough(still held a charge no problem) after my altenator died, I figured it was just old, so I bought a new one, put it on and it died within 30 minutes, got warantee, put another one on and it blew in another 30 min, got warantee, and this time I was checking things to make sure I was getting correct voltages and managed to find that my battery shorted out and was feeding back through the ground. it was bad enough that it blew acid all over the inside of my car when the battery shorted out. changed the battery and haven't had a problem since.
