What are some of the symtoms when your Cat. Conv. is going bad. What is the life expectancy on a cat. Does it give of an exhaust (burning)smell. Is th random cat the way to go or stay with a new stock Cat. I'm not getting any loss of
power, but it feels like the car is giving of more heat, and a funny smell. would there be a check engine code for
this. Holla.

The life expectancy of a Catalytic Converter is the life of the vehicle. When a Cat fails the cause can usually be traced to physical damage or overheating due to an engine problem.

Symptoms of a bad Catalytic Converter include ...
- loss of power
- failing emissions test
- Check Engine Light with Diagnostic Trouble Codes 0702 or 0703

The increased temperature of the Cat and the unpleasant odor are valuable clues. Your engine may be running too rich, and the unburned hydrocarbons are passed down the exhaust stream. The Cat is doing its job, converting the hydrocarbons to less harmful substances. However this over-rich condition puts an increased burden on the Cat and shortens its life. It may also contribute to early failure of the Oxygen Sensors.
