speaker whine

hey guys,

Ive been bothered by this speaker whine that goes with my motor, but only when im in gear, also when i push my brakes it makes a hissing noise and when i put my rear defroster on it whines louder.

Now i have a system and i know my amp is grounded really well since i machine sanded the metal all the way down and my headunit is grounded well too, so im pretty much out of ideas, do you guys think this could be a problem with my "big 3" wires?

let me know any suggestions will be appreciated cant wait to get rid of it

I have the problem with my ipod. You should really put this in the Audio forum. Better answers in there.

The ground should be a clean spot, and also kept as short as possible. Is you amp's casing making any contact to any metal parts of the car? What kind of signal wires are you using?

Is your car battery in good condition. Are the terminals clean or oxidized. Check the water level. Also did you separate the rcas from the power wire? Are you using quality rca's. dont use cheap rca's like radio shack use like monster cable or something of good quality. Try a different ground spot for the amps. Is your ground cable the same size as your power cable. Are you using the correct size guage for power and ground.
If all else fails then you can use a rca noise filter but then you will lose a lot of your high frequency sound.

Is it only after the audio install? Could be the alternator....

If you have more than 1 amp. Make sure every amp has there own seperate ground. Also make sure that the signal wires (RCA) are run on the complete opposite side of the vehicle than your power wire. So if your power wire is on the left side of the vehicle run your RCA on the right side of the vehicle.

ok, ground is in a clean spot, the ground cable and power are the same size, my RCA's cost me a ton.... so they better be good lol, the ground wire is at most 2.5 feet and there is only one amp terminals are clean but i dont know if the battery is up to par..... im going to try another battery since i have like 2 new ones at home and if that doesnt fix it..... i donno,

Cdg2125.... you mentioned the alternator, is there any way to check it? i mean it does have 90k on it and i have a slight feeling it may be it since my lights dim when i hit my brakes,

let me know if there are any other reasons or if anyone has a similar issue.... i appreciate the help guys gonna go try a few things in the meantime

You can get cables that are as good as monster, but a heck of alot less expensive. I am running knuknoceptz signal wires and have no noise issues at all.

In my install I actually have both sets of wires running together. If you have quallity signal wires it should not be an issue.

Possibly, but I was referring more directly to the leads themselves.. if you didn't get good quality ones (more expensive), then I'd try replacing them first.

But, it could just be the connections, yes.

you can buy something called a ground loop isolater, you will need one for every two channels. they hook up at the end of the rca's the into the amp or amps. they dont fix the original problem they just mask most of the sound. they do work pretty well though. they are a rather cheap, easy fix.

its easy for wires/cables to become damaged when changing vehicles, so do not rule them out simply because you had them in two prior vehicles...

Thanks alot for the thread. I'm having the same problem in both of my cars.

My 99 auto makes the noise when I turn my dvd player on I was planning to re-wire the whole car anyway so I will see how that turns out.

My '98 5speed does not have a system at all in it right now (but there is a power wire running from the battery and a remote running from the audio harness but no radio at all) and it only makes the noise in 5th gear (you can hear it if you listen very hard in 4th gear) I don't think its the audio noise in the 5 speed but I'm not sure what it is.

^^^Listen to this guy, cuz this is your problem. I'v had a couple of systems in my lifetime and eveytime Iv ever had that noise it's cuz your running the RCA's on the power line side of your car. I had this done on my max and the whining was out of control!!! so we switched sides of the car and then it was fixed. BTW I have my rca's running on the right side of my car, I have a 98 Max. just in case you need to know. I don't know if that was switched from the 95-96 models....anyways goodluck

If you are running quality RCA's you should not have a problem. I am running my signal wires on the same side as my power wires and have no noise issues...

I ran my rca's through the middle of the car, under the console. made sure they weren't running next to or accross any power wires and I don't have any problems. I agree with the guys above. way to work.

It could be a interference type of problem, like whenever my phone rings or if I am calling someone and hold my phone close to my head unit, there is a really loud ringing/whining sound that comes out of the speakers.

But its most likely not your problem, but couldn't hurt to compare and contrast problems
