Axel boot torn on both side… should I replace rubber boots or replace entire axels?
Well, I’ve 96 SE 5-speed w/ little over 100,000 mile on it. Yesterday I was replacing the brake pads and I’ve found out that both Axel’s rubber boots are torn.
I’m not sure how long it has been like that but my max drives great, and I haven’t heard any clicking sound coming from the axel.
My local shop quoted $330 for replacing both axels w/ remanufactured axels or $160 for just regrease and replacing the boots.
What should I do? I’ve heard remanufactured axels aren’t that good and since my axel didn’t make any sound I’m think about replacing both rubber boots.
Should I replace the entire axels or just the rubber boots? Also, is it really hard to do it by myself? I’ve never replaced the axel before….

You have the same dilemma as me. Even down to the no clicking sound and don't know how long it's been:

BTW, I got quotes for 230 plus tax from Firestone with their own axle w/ 6 mo warranty (don't do any good, I suppose), $ 190 for labor alone from another shop (that charges around $ 90 per hour labor) and last but not least...... $100 labor or $175 parts and labor from my favorite mechanic in Madison, WI, about 1 hour drive from Milwaukee.
So, I am definitely going to that mechanic... but I have not decided on the solution just yet. He said that if we just want to re-boot, it will be US$ 90 with parts and labor from him. I might be just getting the rubber boot from Nissan/auto parts since $$$ is kinda tight these days.

The problem is dirt. If they haven't been torn for a super long time, you can clean them well, regrease and replace the boot. You say it is not clicking or anything, I don't think that is an unreasonable repair. Also make sure they use a 1 piece boot, the split boots are no good and will not last long. good luck
