RAPID BACKFIRING sound

So when i hit the gas very very lightly it doesn't happen. But when i touch the gas a little i get this fast repetative backfiring sound. IT SOUNDS LIKE A MACHINE GUN! That's how fast it is. I have an exhaust leak so my car is loud, so when this happens u can hear it clearly. WTF is it? Sounds like a continuous missfire?

it could just be because of the exhaust leak. when did it start happening?

It's been doing it periodically for months but now its bad. I just got back from the mechanic and he told me bad KS (which i knew) and he says it's probably the problem. He's charging me $240 installed.

1st off... whether it's the cause of the backfiring sound replace your KS (if it is in fact bad)

then... fix the exhaust leak!
(depending on where it is, it might be a good time to put on a good Y-pipe if you don't have one already)

Well i just got the KS replaced (the KS ghost code went away) and got the exhaust leak repaired. When the KS was replaced i noticed it helped. But after the exhaust repair, this thing runs like a CHAMP! I know this will improve my gas mileage also.

Thanks for all of the advice. KS: $250 installed
EXHAUST REPAIR: $65

1995 maxima GXE 187,000 miles.

I think it was the exhaust leak Drew.

Go rotate my tires geek,

If it was like a burble when you let off the gas, that's normal. You don't hear that with the factory exhaust.
