Starter squeel. I believe there is a sticky for this. This occurs when the grease inside the started dries up and gets caked up, causing it hard for the starter to turn. Regrease your starter or if its old rebuild it while its being taken apart.

Dont know if you change your oil regularly, but if you dont that can cause a weird noise that will go away after the engine warms up.

oil is too thick. go for some 0w30. recently did an oil change? can also try some auto-rx to clean any build up which will in turn allow better oil flow even during cold starts.

uhh. other way around. its thicker oil for summer. thinner for winter. and alberta can get pretty cold so 0w30 would be a better bet for winter. however, unless it suddenly got cold over the past few days when this noise started, that may not be the problem. a little hard to figure out without actually hearing it.

it seemed that the starter has problem, this morning when i remote start for several times, it did not start, so i try to start by myself, not start also. i call the service of Alberta motor association, they said the battery is good, maybe the starter was gone.

Sounds like the tensioner and guide. Mine does that now, I recently changed the water pump. I read a bunch of replies on here that it is the timing belt tensioner and guide. I bought the tensioner for 64.00 from www.courtesynissan.com and they even threw in the guide. Im going to try like a nother reply on here said that they did and it went away. I am going to use the new spring from the tensioner in the old one to see if the noise goes away.. If not looks like I will be taking the timing chain cover off and putting the guide in aswell..
There is a clip on here where someone has posted a noise issue.. Might want to find it and listen to it to see if it is the same noise that you are having but almost want to say that it is though... You can look in the service bulletins and they have a write up about the noise and there counter measure is the guide and a tensioner, Which is offset that is why I am going to try just the spring first.. I am going to try that tomorrow and then will reply if it worked or not.

Timing chain tensioner quieted the noise

Ok.. I took the new piston, spring, and the little rubber piece out of the new tensioner and put it in the old tensioner body.. I fired it up and man what a relief.. noise went away.. I didnt use the new tensioner as the new tensioner and guide have a different angle to them... I kept the guide just in case..

The new angle prevents the oil drainage from the tensioner that causes cold start noise, i.e. no tension on the primary chain until oil pressure builds.

I am wondering if people have recommendations on how to find part numbers for various items? For example, lets say you have a starting issue like this and want to try replacing the inhibitor relay, how do I know what the part number is? I have the maxima service manual, but it does not seem to have part numbers... Is there some kind of database or something else that lets you type in the letter/number code in the service manual diagram and get a part number? or some other way?

Oh, one more thing, what is the best way to 'locate' items? for example, if in the service manual I see how for example the inhibitor relay is wired in to the starter, how do I quickly and easily locate this part? I know as a general concept the relays are probably in one spot, but I am trying to get a general answer, like if I am looking for the xyz connector, were is it? By the drivers feet? Right side of the hood, etc.? Maybe there is a nice diagram searchable somewhere?

Yeah like the other guys are saying, regrease the starter and try an oil change with motor flush. Hope I was helpful.

Yes, I actually have Nissan Fast, but in the service manual for example it lists an inhibitor relay in a wiring diagram, and next to it is an identifier of E61... I tried putting E61 into the part code and part no fields in Nissan Fast, but no luck... i am trying to make the tie-together between the service manual, and something (Nissan Fast or other) to find actual parts / part numbers...

below is a diagram that shows all the parts in the 100k kit. if you look over to the left you can see the timing chain tensioner. I am not at home right now or I would take a pic and post it.
I would say that it is fairly easy to do. I removed one hose on the power steering resivoire then I poured out the fluid. I then stuffed the house to the back of the motor towards the firewall. There is 4 10mm bolts that hold on the timing chain tensioner access cover on. Then there is two more bolts that hold the tensioner in place. It is easier if you unloosen the top bolt first on the tensioner so that it kind of relieves some of the pressure on the piston and guide. Then remove the second bolt being very careful not to drop anything inside the motor.. Then I just used the piston, spring, and the little rubber piece in the old tensioner. I really didnt want to have to tear into the timing chain cover to put the guide in. Alls I can say is that it worked for me and I got the idea from a differnt post on here.. If you search for the water pump replacement guide it shows you pictures of the timing chain tensioner. here is the url for the write up on water pump replacement. look at the tensioner and the access hole. It seems like alot of stuff to do or might seem hard but it really is not that bad...
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=308680 for the waterpump.

Hope it helps...

I also started getting some cold starter sound problems. If the car has been sitting at least overnite in really cold temps then when I turn the key it is just a click and nothing else. However, if the temps aren't that cold the engine will fire but there will be a short sound after.

Glad I found this post should help get to the bottom of things. Having to post at least 15 messages means that I end up looking for something that didn't necessarily bring me here in the first place!

Remember the original poster Ward lives in Edmonton. Winter generally starts there just after Halloween.

00W50 is the only way to go and full synthetic in those winters.

Brrr!!

Hoho, my post was still replied, thanks guys.
I went to see my mechanic, he told me don't worry that noise, because the noise only come when the car is cold start, so if the noise come out when i am driving, i should pay more attension, maybe change timing chain tensioner. And he said i should not pay more money on a old car, just drive it. And these days nothing happened,

I have a similar question. During winter, whenever I start the engine in the morning, it will start and then dies immediately. I'll have to push the pedal down a little so that the needle does not dip below 1500rpm for 3-5 seconds. After that, it's all right. Happens only during the cold season. Any idea why?

I had a idle almost stall issue, there is a thread on that, basically I cleaned by IACV, and replaced my PCV, and made sure I always use super gas, and my idle drop / stall or almost stall issue went away.

Yes, our cars have the timing chains, not belts-- thank god!!! That's a $1,000 repair my friend w/ his Civic just loves every 90k!

...And I also get a noise when I start the Max on cold days-- I'm getting the "dying duck" noise as it has been previously described. Just put a heater in the garage, so I'm not getting it lately!
