Two challengers, what do you guys think, Grand Prix GTP and Jetta VR6 Vs 97 Auto Max

The Jetta VR6 is a 5spd and is completely stock, its a 2000. Ive seen it race before against a Civic that I have also raced. It beat the Civic by about the exact same about that I did, maybe a little less. The Grand Prix GTP is also completely stock but I lost to one before I put some mods on my car. I now have Intake and Exhaust. What do you guys think? Its not for money or anything and I know both guys so its pretty much for fun (and bragging rights) Who do you think would win? Oh yeah the GTP is an Automatic. Thanks

Ok i am going to answer this question twice.. mainly because i have seen you win races you should not win naturally.. so i am guessing you got some skills.. so i would say race him..

Now for a normal AUTO .. no way in hell.. the Jetta will be close.. but not even a stock 5spd 4th Gen will keep up with a GTP

Yeah I figured the GTP would be a loss because I have lost to one before, I think I can beat the Jetta though. Ill keep you posted on how it turns out. Ill race both though because they are both buddies of mine so its just for fun. Id like to see where my car is at. Thanks for the response. Take Care

I was always under the impression that a stock 5-speed 4th gen Max and a stock GTP were virtually identical in the 1/4 and 0-60. I remember seeing numbers that were the same in magazines. True the GTP has more HP, but it is an auto and heavier.

Anyway, does anyone know how these cars compare completely stock? I would say that it's close enough that it would totally depend on the driver and who gets the best jump. Anyone have any real-life experiences?

Stock GTP and a stock 5th Gen are virtually identical... the stock 97 5spd runs 15.6 - 15.7 .. a Stock GTP will run from mid 14's to high 14's... and yes its a Supercharged AUTO

Beaten a White GTP here on base. I know the guy, asked him to race back when the GTP guys were on forum. Beat him 3 times in a row.....it may be supercharged.........but its still a POS.

I think the GTP's are all auto, first of all. Also, i believe the common consensus on them is that they lack topend, even more so than our 4thGens..

Re: Nope....

well were you stock back then? because your car runs 15.1/15.2 bone stock.. so if you had that intake and catback you are in that mid to high 14's bracket.. then which its all up to driver..

keep in mind you have a 95 ... he has a 97 .. the 95 i believe can run high 14's bone stock with an expert driver..

Sprint, Nealoc(I know I spelled his name wrong) has beaten the GTP.

Long time no see SB. Go for the VR6 but race the GTP to see how much faster the GTP is. He probably won't kill you.

What year is your max? I drive a 1995 auto and I beat a 2000 jetta VR6 by about 1 1/2 car lengths when we did about a 1/4 mile, and he was a stick! Maybe he was just a crapy driver?

95 is slightly faster than 97-99... it's probably just different drivers though.

I got beat by a GTP at the track. He ran a 14.4@97 to my 14.8@94. He also said he just got the car back after having his THIRD tranny replaced. What a quality car! Oh yeah, I want a rematch

I disagree with ya, buddy. If you're running 15.7s in a stock 5 speed Maxima, your skills are horrible. Most mags get lower 15s (15.2-15.4) out of the 4th and 5th gen 5 speeds. I also have a hard time believing my 3 mods (at the time) allowed me to shed 1 second in the 1/4 mile. NO magazine has been able to break into the 14s with a GTP. C&D, R&T, and MT have all run 15.1-15.3@90-92mph in the GTPs and GTXs. I know for a fact that many GTPs have hit high 14s stock with some even lower, but the fact remains that the mags have tested these cars just as much as the Max's and they can't get significantly better times with GTP than the Max. The GTP is also an auto which makes it even easier to launch. I spend a good bit of time on the GP website and these guys want you to believe that there are a ton of stock GTPs running 14s. Truth is, there aren't. Most pullied GTPs with intake and exhaust work run lower to mid 14s. There are those that are in the 13s, but those are typically the crazier guys pushing their luck with the 3.25" pullies.

An auto 4th gen vs a GTP is going to be in favor of the GTP by a long shot. A auto 4th gen vs a VR6 5 speed will probably go to the VR6. It's like comparing a stock 5 speed Max to a auto Max. We know what the outcome will be if the 5 speed driver is decent.
