what about an oil filter? which one should i use, im not a racer NOR a ricer, so i dont need to have the most expensive filter

what makes one filter better than others ? is it physical size and dimensionsor something else ? fram filter ?

i am thinking buy a jug of castrol GTX , buy an oil filter and get some mechanic to do it for me ( lift and change )

Been using it for over 750,000 miles in 4 vehicles. Keeps the crank case very clean, oil analysis comes back clean and I've never had any unusual engine issues. None of my vehicles have ever consumed oil between changes. It's definately the best stuff out there.

As others stated, use Castrol GTX or Havoline, if you can find it. Use a Nissan OEM filter, WIX (go to NAPA) or Purolator Pure One. However, the Purolator is more expensive in Canada than the other two as its closer to $15 plus tax (at least in Vancouver).

If I were you, I would go on the internet and buy two bottles of AutoRX (see www.auto-rx.com) and run it through the crankcase. I would then switch to synthetic oil using Esso Extra XD3 0w30, PAO, full synthetic available only at Esso bulk plants. This oil is superior to Mobil 1 and less than 2/3 the cost in Canada. It lends itself to longer oil change intervals and on an annualized basis I would bet that your cost of oil and filters would be virtually the same compared to buying Castrol GTX 5w30.

I used Castrol most of the time and converted to Esso XD3 synthetic (be careful not to get the dino) in February, following one AutoRX application.

My engine is so quiet now that I literally can not hear it at idle.

I will not be using dino oil in the Maxima again - Esso XD 3 for me.

This oil is not available in the United States. Join www.bobistheoilguy.com and run a search on Esso XD3 0w30 and you will read ringing endorsements for the product.

By the way, at your mileage, your VQ engine is just getting broken in.

PS If you decide to stick with dino oil and intend to pay a lube joint to change the oil for you, just bring the oil filter of choice with you as they will have the oil and may not do the change for you if they don't provide it.

You should also buy a Haynes manual which only costs about Cdn$20. Anyone with the least amount of mechanical ability would be able to change your oil for you.

While Castro makes good oil I think it is overpriced. I have been using Mobil 5-30 for 25 plus years, change it between 4 or 5k miles and have never had any engine problems on any of my cars. I got 275k on an Olds 2.8 motor and have almost 160k on my Altima, 145k on a Maxima and 115k on a Dodge van. None of them use any oil between changes.
I would be leary of using any kind of internal engine cleaner. removing carbon deposits on a high mileage engine can lead to the motor burning oil. I don't know how long you have owned the car but from my experience tinkering with a high mileage engine can cause problems, I would just give it the normal maintenance.

Good luck

Mobils not bad, actually there really aernt very many "BAD" oils, just some are better than others, GTX is better than mobil in most cases, but mobil will work in almost all cases acceptably well...

5qts of Catrol GTX is $9.97 at Walmart. How is $1.99/Quart overpriced???

Personally I use Mobil One Synthetic on my truck and Maxima, but while breaking in my new motor in my Maxima I am using Castrol GTX to about 10K miles. Ive gotten (2) 5qt jugs so far and will be getting another next week.

basically what ive learned so far here and from an aquantence of mine whos dad is a mechanic is this

small time mechs with private garages use recycled oil so they charge 20 dollars NO TAX , cash only and no RECIEPT for an oil and filter change, i dont want no cheap recycled oil,

the only place i want to go to is to price club ( costco here in canada ) they use Castrol and its brand new, charge 23.97 + tax for oil and filter

walmart charges the same 23.97 but use new penzzoil

im not sure what canadian tire i think uses quaker state or something, but they charge some where around 30 - 35 dollars so i will not be going to them

thanx

Why not do it yourself for around $15? All you need is a 14mm wrench or socket and a drain pan.

The quality of the filter is probably more important than the oil brand, since most oils are probably at least "ok", even the cheapest Walmart brand. I'd also worry more about the quality of the workers doing the oil change, then again I've had problems with dealers, as well as the quik lube places. Personally, I'd think a private garage, with you supplying the oil and filter would be best. Or the place with the castrol oil.

I took the max to Juffy lube today for an oil change. Told them Penzoil 10w30...its what my old man wanted.

Dont ask. It's not my car anymore, just a daily driver, because im planning on getting a better "project" max.

But yea, is that any good?

The Pennzoil 10w30 would not be my oil of choice, but it's probably OK. If you lived in a colder climate, you would be better off with 5w30.

I would use the Castrol GTX over Pennzoil any day.

What do they do to oils to make them high mileage? Like Cast. GTX 5W30 vs GTX 5W30 High Mileage? Is there an actual difference or is it just marketing?

I've priced Nissan filters vs. Honda filters and the Honda filters come out to be more expensive. What part number is on the Honda filter you are using and what is the price you pay? I get the Nissan filters for about $4.50 per filter.

Dont know the part number for the filter. But, Honda only has two oil filters, the one used on the S2K, and the one used for everything else, thats the ones we can use. I get my filters through a friend who stocks Honda and Nissan filters, and he gets the Honda ones for cheaper, far cheaper than $4.50.

why would you want to use walmart or any other place to change your oil, when you can do it yourself for cheaper. Then you will know its done right, and you can also choose the filter and oil that you want.

I agree w/ Bobo for the most part. Buy a Bosch 3323 Oil filter and a good quality synthetic oil (I use Mobil 1) and change it yourself. I spend $25 per oil change and change every 10,000 miles. Do the math and it works out to less money than you spend on Dino.

Not to sound like too much of a hippie, but synthetic is not actually synthetic at all, it is simply vegitable based, not petroleum based. I buy as little petroleum products as I can (yes I buy gas, but from Shell the lowest importer of Middle East oil in my area) because I ACTUALLY do support my troops by wanting them to come home to their families and not die in Iraq. I also try to consume less than the average American in everything I do, and by changing every 10,000 with synthetic I use 1/3 the oil that most people do. I need my money more than the oil companies do.

Oh, and I should add the at just under 140,000 miles the Max runs like new.
